for those of you that are new the 1610 was pollinated with its own male flowers (1161 x self) just as the 1725 harp (1385 x self )was a selfed pumpkin.
when this is done and the pumpkin produced is big? theres a great opportunity that the offspring are more than capable of same or possibly better results.(no wondering how pollon from another plant might effect the offspring) i would reccommend only selfing (or sibbing as well ) a seed once though. more that that could result in inbreeding defects in the offspring.
in effect when you self or even sib for that matter. you have reinforced the genetics in that pumpkins seeds and should get a seed full of vigor.

pap, do ya think, that the selfing is the reason for lower seed counts...or is it the size of the pkn, causing lower seed counts??? Peace, Wayne

hi wayne it seems that many times selfed and/or sibbed pumpkins on many occasions do seem to produce less seeds. ( my 1450 from 2006 for example was a sib 1068 x 1068 ) the pollinator 1068 grew rons 2006 wr 1502 and my 1068 seed as noted grew the 1450. that 1450 had very few seeds (but turned out to be a great pollinator for pumpkins like the 1161 rodonis ,etc) we can only guess as to why we are starting to see lower seed counts in many of the big pumpkins. it could very well be because of the inbreading but then again ? the ammendments and growth products now being used could also play a part in less seed production but bigger pumpkins? i just grow um and dont have the science background to be sure.

I've heard that its not really good to self or sib pollinate because the genetic traits will sometimes cause deformaties in the next generation pumpkins. Things like fused etc. Like I said I'm not really sure just something that I heard. Its evident that some of these selfed polinated seeds have produced some good genetics that have grown some big ones.

anything thats big to go into big. hopefully you will select a pollinator that also brings in some different genetics. the 1450 is already in the 1610 as it was the pollinator for the 1161-which grew the 1610. the jury is still out as to what i will do?

Wayne, I have so many options when it comes to pollinators for the 1610. I may pollinate with the Wallace 1596. The 1596 has the 1161 also as the 1068 Wallace. I think it'll be a good one. I also am keeping the 991 Urena in mind for that cross.

i think the 1556 werner dont have any 1068 in it...that mybe a good pollinator for the 1610,but offspring my not be orange, just big and heavy.
