This week I experienced a BES. I know I made the mistake of watering inconsistently and believe that is what caused it. I am getting differing opinions from growers about whether to grow this seed again. Some say it is a genetic trait and do not grow it again. Other say it is almost always due to inconsistent watering. Opinions?

It is probably a little of both. The genetic component is a fast growing pumpkin and poor shape. Inconsistant watering will push the pumpkin growth along to fast. The plant size can reduce the problem or make it worse.

If your pumpkin is wider than it is long there will be trouble.

there has been some seed stocks in the past that did blow a high percentage out in the a** end(712 kuhn,125 wolf come to mind).they would be a yes for genetic.Every seed will vary in the range of shapes you can get so its a crap shoot.any seed stock that can produce monster growth will have a percentage go down to bes -nothing is bullet proof-I agree with ron short and tall fruit -higher%
