Anyone know of some seeds that regularly produce 15% heavy or better? Am looking to breed that into my own line after it went light this year.
Thanks,
Glen

Glen, I think the 901 Hunt has a pretty good track record for going heavy. The Wiz grew one last year & the resulting pumpkin was 26 or 27% heavy! I was glad that I borrowed pollen from his plant & that's what went into my Colo. state record 1308. at least a couple of the 1308's that were grown this year went a tad bit heavy, hopefully reflecting the 901 Hunt's genetic impact! I don't know how available the 901 Hunt is, but it sure might be worth seeking!

Thanks for the suggestion, think I saw one for auction somewhere, will definatley try to find one. Had one year or two ago but it had a bad ribbon vine, so I didn't get any fruit off it. Even if I could find a seed with that as the pollinator I might get that heavy gene, thanks.

Glen...the 1421.5 Stelts has been going very heavy for alot of growers including me...24% heavy on the 898 Dixon from this year...1421.5 Stelts x 1059.6 Vincent/McGill.

Glen I can vouch for the 1421 going heavy. I grew the 1404 Bryson,which it's self was 25% heavy,my 1166 was 24% heavy.

The 1421 has an equal tendancy to go very light. Three growers I know in Europe and Canada that grew it this year had pumpkins go ca. 11%, 15.5% and 18.5% light, some of the lightest pumpkins ever. The 901 Hunt is the most consistent in going heavy.

1288 wallace and 901 hunt.

for the 1288 wallace, top ten progeny average 13% heavy (similar to 901 hunt). top ten average weight for 1288 wallace = 1410 pounds (over 100 pounds better than 901 hunt). seed got a bad rap because its hard to germinate, but I think its one of the best out there for % heavy, if not THE best. Proven to over 1600 pounds, similar to 901 and 1488 marsh.

Glen, I would look into a 1147 Shenoha. Last year it produced a 19% heavy fruit for me. Most of the off spring that I know has went 15% and over. Shazzy might enlighten you more on this seed.

Nathan is correct on the the 1147. Here is a pic of the inside. It was 15.4% heavy and has produced between 10 to 24 % heavy all white pumpkins. I had a nice one going 2 years ago on a 1147 over 80" on day 20 but lost the main vine shortly after that to soil rot disease.

It produced the 873 naylor that went 24% heavy and was crossed with a 24% heavy producing 1119 mcmullen plant. I grew that seed in 2010 that produced a the 20% heavy 1209. The 1209 produced 10% heavy and the pumpkin never grew for 30 days before the weigh off and was the 1156 Shenoha this year grown on a main vine with the top chewed off at 7' about 4" across. The density of flesh with that dark orange, greenish and sometimes maroonish colors in this distinctly different tough flesh.

I like the 873 as the best chance of adding heavy with the above mentioned crosses along with the 1147. The 1147 is the 1041.5 mckie x self. I haven't heard of any 1147s going anything but 10% heavy and most all progeny went over 15%.

My last post for best chances from the above crosses was in reference to my post only. All of the stated crosses should do the trick and the 566.5 looks very promising. With the heat many times like they have down south by john and that we have here although a little less severe, I have seen many pumpkins jump out fast and mature more early. Up north in cooler temps with slower growth for longer periods, I would think chances of heavier could be increased as they have the time to thicken and grow at same time. With this in mind, a pumpkin from down south that produces conistant heavy is a good sign it will do this in most every climate in my mind. Besides that, the 566.5 genetics are sweet!

Shazzy seen the wolf and wallace link up great! the
1488 Marsh is (1306 Jutras (1450 Wallace X 1068 Wallace)X 1407 Wolf)so about the same gentics as the 566.5 if you
need a couple I have a few Shazzy.
