It seems like the 1450 Wallace '06 is lurking around in the genetic backgrounds of a very high percentage of the largest pumpkins grown in the past few years. Has anyone else noticed this? And if so, what do you think might be some underplanted seeds with the 1450 Wallace a generation or two back which might have great potential?

Russ, I was thinking of putting the 1450 back in the 1566 Rodonis and the Wallace freak if I get one.

I grew the 498 08 Van Hook (1385x1450) this season up here in cool manitoba weather, with very little early season protection, didn't get pollinated till july 16th at about 11 ft, and I got an 853 lber, which was the 2nd largest grown in MB this year to make it to the scale, and as far as I know the biggest so far off the 498, but I think if grown in the right climate by a good grower, a monster is there. The pumpkin wouldn't quit growing even when frosty nights slowed it down and killed about 60-70% of the plant mid september. Cold and frost actually stalled it out 3 different times from end of august through september, and each time I thought it was done, but when it got warm again for afew couple days in a row and I let the pumpkin warm back up, each time it came back to life to put on the lbs again. It was growing right till the end when I cut it off for weigh off. This plant had big vines, and huge top roots at every node. Unfortunately the pumpkin went a bit light. Nice pumpkin though, its in my diary. I am considering growing it again next season.

1306 Jutras is the one you want Russ. Way under grown. The few that have been grown, have done well.

Scott, part of the multitude of 1450 crosses by the Infamous, VanHook brothers, comes from the overwintering of their original 1450 seed...I think they kept it growing for 3 seasons?!!!! Lot's of hard work, but that's how them VanSandBaggus brothers are!!!! Peace, Wayne

yes scott @ kim
if memory serves me correctly the 1450 yielded less than 75 seeds.enough to get some out there but not a flood of sseds.
it had a decent run and proved out to be a very good pollinator for over the chart pumpkins. that run is however over now and we are on to other seeds.
gotta keep the genetics moving heavier.

Ron Rahe (uncron1@hotmail.com)

If anyone wants to try a 1450 x heavy cross, I made a genetic cross last year.
150 Rahe 10 (1378 Glasier 09 x 65 Rahe 09)
1378 Glasier 09 was 961.5 Urena 06 x 1223 Glasier 08
1223 Glasier was 961.5 Urena 06 x 1041 McKie
65 Rahe was # 15 Beachy 02 x 1450 Wallace
# 15 Beachy 02 was 730 Stellpflug x sibling
This cross is packed full of some of the best weight varience genetics.
