From World Class Giant Pumpkin 3 Nick Welty says, Begin with a productive seed that has done well for you or others in your region. When planting this seed, some flowers should be self-pollinated,and others on other plants,cross-pollinated.The cross-pollination should use males from a plant which is most genetically different from your original productive seed. This cross-pollination produces an F1 and should be a productive seed. The F1 hybrid seed is then crossed with the self-pollinated original producer seeds,or the original producer itself. The result is the F2.
Is this saying there are 2 pumpkins on one plant 1 being selfed and the other pollinated from a 2nd plant.

Sounds like one for instance growZ a 1787est Wallace, and pollinates two on that plant, One a self, one crossed with the 1495 SteltZ...(becomes the 1850 Grande) then the next year cross grow both, then cross the selfed 1787est female into the 1850 Grande. IZ that what your thinkin Nick?

Wiz, that sounds good send some of those seeds my way. I'm kinda getting the jist of this growing thing but i thought this was a standard way of purifying your own stock and starting fresh with what you want.Almost like a blank cd, now you can put what you want on it and and keep adding to it.But at some time you will need to download again and see what you have. Mike, You are correct. Growing your own seedZ from great genetic lineZ that one haZ studied accumulating the traitZ one wantZ.... Growing your own....

Wiz, I think you are on the right track with crossing the sibs the next year.
You should be able to generate an F57 hybrid sooner that is 3/8 Big, 3/8 Heavy and 3/8 Orange.
I should be able to set a new WR with my F57 and receive an orange jacket when I develop the seed. (I'll make sure to deliver you a bubble wrap personally in 2015.)

It is a general principle that works well. Doesn't have to be from the same plant, and can be applied in other situations where similar crossbacks take place and the result is better consistency: IE 1787est x 1725 Harp or 1787x 1070,5 Langevin (1725zself)
Or 1421.5 Stelts x 1725 Harp (75% is 1385 with some great new blood 25% 904) the male being self
Or stretch a little wider (may or may not be less consistent) 1421.5 x 1161 (1385 and 1161 have close match grandparents)
a wide cross with the attempt at true hybrid vigor can be hit or miss, this is a way to aid consistency, and often inbreeding, but not too much inbreeding is a quicker way to lock in % heavy
