milford, CT,

I'm starting to organize potential seeds to grow for 2012 and there are so many that could be the "ONE"..I like to make crosses that add traits that will make the offspring even better. Seeds I am mulling around about are 1725 Harp, 1161 Rodonis, 1605 Sweet, 1807 Stelts, 1789/1647 Wallace, 1495 Stelts, and my own 1176 Lombardi. My thinking goes in this order. 1: shell size (OTT), Shape, % Heavy, and length of time growing (did it grow right up to picking). Any thought would be very helpful. Mark

My only thought on this is plant your own and then use any of the rest you have listed.. Happy New Year Mark........

id suggest planting an equal number of proven with an equal number of unprovens.i can only do two plants and im smitten by what i saw rons 1725 do last year (1789) so im going with two unprovens. rons 1789 and my 1647 ( 1725 x 1725 sib)which was pollinated with rons 1789
i had great luck several years ago with a 1068x1068 sib (the 1450 wallace ) so why not think lightning could strike again? my plan would be to pollinate both of my 2012 pumpkins with either a stelts or some other giant pollon from outside the 1725 lines.
either way best of luck to you mark, hope to see you at next years weigh-offs.

I'm focusing on weight, % heavy, and then shape. I'm not concerned with OTT other than its relation to % heavy. I'm also trying to avoid pumpkins that have collapsed cavities. I looked at fruit 1500lb +, selected for 10% heavy or more, then I choose my crosses based on crossing long fruit by high fruit. Many of these heavy fruit seem to be the long, slow growers, but its hard to find data on that. I'd like to see a few 1810 x 1807 crosses. It could be the next Eaton x Larue.

Why not an 1818.5 X 1807 Farmer Ben. I think a lot of people are forgetting about the new world record for some reason :(

All of Leonardo Urena's 11' crosses have great potential,, I love the 1402(1725HarpX991) 1704 pollinator, definitely going in here. Dale Marshall 1723 I think has a chance to be great, maybe the "next' 1725 as far as a great selfed seed with horsepower to spare. The 1080 hunt is another seed to watch,,Steve Daletas 11'crosses, with the 991 as a pollinator on a few, & the 1502?(991X898) could be one of the next super pollinators,, the 1818 obviously should not be overlooked either,, the 1210 van hook (991X1450)will grow some slungers this year also,, and Pap's 1647 & the 1789 both look "freaky",, and many many more!

I'm not forgetting the 1818. I prefer %heavy and cleaner shapes. The excessive ribbing and sag line in the 1807 also worry me, but not as much as going light and being tipped over. I'm also a little biased, the 1810 was what inspired me to try growing AG's. If you look at my criteria, there is little difference in the three 1800lbers weight, so I'd rank them by % heavy and shape, thus I'd choose the smaller two. don't get me wrong, If I had an 1818 seed, I'd plant it!

Mark I really like your crosses from 2011. Great genetics and both pumpkins went heavy to the chart. Your 1027 Lombardi 11 is one I'm actually considering growing this year. I think it has a change to grow big, heavy, and orange(color one of my considerations when picking a seed).
I think your 1176 X 1725 Harp could be a good cross.
I also like the 1161 X 1725 on paper.

Correction-1502 Daletas is (1725X898) not 991X898

We are considering the 1818 x 1807 cross this year. We will be also growing 2 of our own. The 1080 Hunt (1678 x 898) will see dirt due to it's performance in 2011. It's the 901 on steroids. We will also grow either our 1329 dmg (1080 x 1161) or our 1464.8 (1161 x 1080). I'm not sure if the 1161 is better as a mother or a father in the two crosses, so we'll have to research it. There are so many seeds out there that could grow a new WR, so why not take a chance on all the great crosses you make.

Happy New Year,
Jane & Phil

If all goes well we are going to do the 1818 x 1807 cross and 1495 x 1404. Seems like a no brainer to us.

and revrse cross:

1155 Baumert/Teichert 2010 (1566 x 1161)

Does that really make a diff if someone else has already made it.... It kinda of depends on each seed right! Not every seed is the same, go for it Glenn, maybe you get the magic one@!

@ Farmer Ben: "I'm not forgetting the 1818. I prefer %heavy and cleaner shapes"

From what I have researched, there is a possibility that the shape of the 1818 is the reason it made it to the scales, and didn't develop a pinhole or split like most of the other pumpkins of around that size. The weight of the 1818 was supported by a much larger base. In other words, a lot of the weight was actually supported by the ground and not by the pumpkin itself. There is some reason to believe that a pumpkin over a certain weight, will not be able to support itself, unless it has very thick walls or an unusual shape.

I didn't want to keep him away from doin' it (because I think that this might be a good cross), I was just trying to give an answer to "why has it never been done before". ;-)

I never meant to diss the new WR 1818 Bryson. It seems like alot of people will be doing the 1818 x 1807 crosses because those fruit had plenty of seeds. I just want to see an 1810 x 1807 cross, in part, because there won't be many chances to make it. May be large OTT x %heavy is the way to go. experimenting is part of the fun.

I'm planning 3 crosses next year. 1662 Stelts x 1676 Chechon, 1677 Hunt x 1548 Marsh, and 1674 Marsh x 1531 Haist. I might do 2 more in a greenhouse, but I havent decided yet.

I got a couple of crosses that I like one for size and the other for Orange.
1689 Jutras x 1663 Zoellner.
1290 Poirier x 735 Veader Hahn
1333 Young x
You think you know what you have in your line up but I am forgetting the other two seeds, plus my own 343 Sheldon. Hoping to through some orange into that one. Was a Howard Dill winner.

I'm planting four plants this year. The seeds are a Bryson 1118.5 Bryson, an 1807.5 Stelts and a 1,560 Urena and a 1647 Wallace. I'm not sure what the pollinator will be.
