You see talk of the "Freak" and of Paps 1647, but you do not hear about the others that got away. For instance, Leonardo Urena grew his 1360 Urena 2011 DMG (1210 VanHook x 1303 Sweet). In his write up, he claims it was the fastest growing in the patch. This is a cross that could be great. What else is out there?

In Germany:
1690 Team Heavy East 2011 DMG/EST (1207 Young x 991 Urena)
at the beginning of august they estimated it at more then 1400 lbs (at day 60)
It got a pinhole at the end of august but continued growing for some time
Just to remember and to compare: the actual European record is the 1611 Daho 2009

i think the reason you hear so much about rons 1789 "the freak" is because a picture was posted showing its tremendous size plus the fact that this pumpkin was still at its peak (taping over 1700 in august) before it decided to blow a small pin hole. no question it would have ended up taping well over 2,000 lbs. would it have weighed over 2,000? possibly not but still a freak by no other name. the reason many liked paps 1647 was that it weighed way over chart and was a sib (1725 x 1725) pollinated with from rons freak 1789. every year there will be several stories about the monsters that got away.these seeds should not be over looked in our quest for 2,000 pounds.

The fastest growing ones will likely have pinholes, or holes you can put your hand through. That's what happens when they grow fast. But get one of those and hold it together... I think there is great potential in pursuing these avenues.

Joe Scherber (cojoe) had a 1725 Harp that grew a 1451 est this last year that went down to rot. The current state record in Colorado is 1308 so there is an excellent chance that record would have been broke, but what made this pumpkin even more impressive is that there wasn't a pumpkin grown in Colorado this last year that was over 1,000 pounds due to weather. Who knows what that pumpkin could have done under better conditions. Joe crossed the 1451 with a clone of the 1161 that grew the 1725 Sweet. One of the more intriguing crosses I think this last year.
