I'm growing two competition plants this year. One is the 1027 Lombardi 11(1161 Rodonis X 1421 Stelts).
The other will be either the 1248 Hester 07(1370 Rose X 1068 Wallace) or the 1244 Rea(1161 Rodonis X 1610 Lieber). These two are planted side-by-side, and are both growing normally. Which ever I choose, I plan on crossing into the 1027 and reverse. My goal is big and orange for this year, and hopefully seeds that produce big and orange in the future. Which would you keep? 1248 or 1244? Reasons why may be helpful.

Alternative suggestion (for more crosses): keep your three plants, the 1027 of course, and from the other two you make a choice which one you want to grow big...either the 1348 or the 1244...and the other one could be grown in a different direction with only a few vines (e.g., its main vine parallel to the secondaries of the big plant), just for the production of some males. Then, you can, for example, put the pollen of the small plant on your 1027, and the pollen of the 1027 on the females of the big plant at the double-planted site. The 1348 has already produced some orange ones, even though I haven´t found a 1000+ yet. Therefore, I would be inclined to keep the 1244 for the production of a very big one (because of its load of 1161 genetics it should have the potential) and the 1348 as the alternative pollinator for the 1027.

That 1348 has grown some beauties, same cross as 1207 Don and 904 stelts, I'd use it as pollinator with that crosses track record as male in proved seeds. A good friend of mine great 1348 two years ago and was right there with top seeds in growth, ended up going about 26% heavy, close to 1000 and stopsign red-orange.

I'm still taking opinions LOL. I knew it might be a tough decision when I planted them both together.

Pumpking,
That is a good suggestion, but I don't want to take a chance of upsetting the roots of the keeper, by digging out the other plant. Also, two A.G. plants along with the rest of the vegetables in the garden, will keep me busy enough.

Thanks for the replies so far, I'll take them into consideration.

...ooops, probably a little misunderstanding in my first comment. i didn´t mean to suggest digging out the other plant. I thought it might be some ft away from the other one, and therefore could stay there (like in case of back-to-back planted AGs), but you grow only one vine of the second plant (to make it produce some males for pollination, but to avoid pronounced mineral withdrawal and patch area covering by this second plant).

That´s true, don´t dig out any plants next to each other. That would indeed be upsetting the roots of the neighbor. I also remove backups simply by cutting them off at the stump and leave their roots in the patch.

Whatever decision you make, it will be the right decision. Good luck.

Glenna's 1244 has some awesome genetics - I'm growing it too.

Pumpking,
I understand now what you meant. The plants are about two feet apart. So one is definitely going to be sacrificed. I'll be cutting that one off near ground level, as you do. Thanks for your input.

This evening I culled the 1244 Rea, in favor of the 1348 Hester. The 1348 was a little bigger plant. I also like the fact the it will bring a little difference in genetics to the 1027 Lombardi. I'm guessing the 1244 will grow some nice pumpkins this year, and am looking forward to seeing pics of them.
I bought both of these seeds(1244 and 1348) in the same seed auction lot. So there was not strings attached to either seed. It wasn't an easy decision, but I'm happy with the one I made.
Thanks for all the input!
