For Ron or Pap or anyone who knows for certain, was the 1579 pollinated by the same 1789 that grew the 1872? If so that would be a 15% heavy 1381 x freak shell size 1789. Always been a strategy for success breeding thick dense flesh fruits with big shelled pumpkins.
That strategy worked nicely in an illinois cross with the 1092 naylor 2011. It was Tyson's 991 urena plant that was 20 percent heavy crossed with my 1725 harp plant in 2011 that produced my 1097 that was 6 percent light but notorious for a big shell trait. The result was a 6% heavy 1451 McMullen 2012. Grown in the midwest in severe drought and heat. The combo worked nicely in this case in this individual pumpkin. For the quest for 2500, big shelled times heavy or vice versa might be the recipie for success. Hoping that 1579 pollinator was same plant as the 1872 was grown on.......that could be a sick potential cross.
