Scroll the gpc list and post your 2012 crosses that if have viable seeds will dominate the 2013 leader board.
Post as many as you want. Explain your rationale or don't.
My picks are the 1649 and 1579 in that order

I think the time of one or two real top seeds is just about over. With more growers, and more skill the platform for big fruit seems more level then ever. Its all about the ammount of dirt a seed sees and the skill level of the growers growing it. The more its grown and the better the grower,,the bigger the chanse of succes. 6 seeds that have grown this years top 10 seen a whole lot of dirt. We only had to wait for a couple of big ones.
Choose? any out of the top 100 would do, its all about what your gut tells you (and for some the % heavy and the pollinator)

I agree tina and frank.....so back to thread message......take a guess.....go out on a limb.....pick early crosses that you think have the potential......big or small.....north..west.....east...south......
Take a guess. like horse breeding, there are theories of breeding, and then there is proof in the pudding.
This is just fun, not discounting smaller crosses or discounting the highest weight crosses.
Try to predict the future and state a 2012 cross that not only has the potential, but will make its mark.

after lots of looking. the 1st pick for me, if i plant a new seed, would be ron's 1579 (1381 x 1789) the 1381 is a rock! and the 1789 put in for size........should be a great cross.....

I would like to quote a grower from last year- "1140 Finders, 901 Urena x 1161 Rodonis, 14 % heavy, nuff said!" Frank & Tina, you are a bit too modest. I think your seed will be seeing a lot of dirt next year and will produce some surprising results.

i think shazzy was looking for the new crosses that will be in demand , not proven seeds, unless i read the post wrong,, .... i love the looks of the 1140 also but...:)

Missed the part about 2012 crosses. Now I understand why Frank and Tina did not list the 1140.

It is all good. The 1140 both on paper and now on th leader board shows that some more growers will see that potential is out there from all regions. Sometimes the true test of certain genetics are not those grown in the best environment, but those that kick ass in the harshest of environments. 1140.
That being said, I just like to test my own wits by scrolling the leaderboard and seeing tons of possibilities.....
And then narrow down.....and narrow down.....and make a call.....and see if right or wrong next year.
I think I created this post mostly to encourage more to scrll the list and start thinking what direction they want to go with and have aa strategy before the auction season starts.

I like the 1775 Star, the 1770.5 Lieber, and the 1655 Ford/Given. Big, selfed seeds of 1725 Harp, 1495 Stelts, and 1789 est Wallace, the three seeds with the most fruit in the top 50.

make your own great cross and grow your own! Did it this year, grew a new personal best. Happens to lots of people. The genetics are so good why wouldn't you?

I have grown my own, I have grown new crosses, and I have grown the top proven. My 2 personal bests came from a 991 and 1303 which were both proven. The thing about a new season of crosses and especially with the amount of auctions, many of these new crosses will be able to get picked up at a relatively cheap price. If you go on a limb and buy a couple and save them, then odds are they will get proven out. Not only are you helping a club out, but you may have a potentially hot seed before they become hot. I usually narrow down some new crosses to 2 or 3 and by them at auction and maybe try one new cross, one of my own, and one proven out of my 3 plant patch. It is a win win situation with helping the clubs, having fun trying to predict the future, and having a nice seed inventory for future growing or even to use as backups. The ones I do not use after 4 years or so I give away to newbies before they are less viable. SoCal, I will let you look at my choices for a while and let you tell me why I like them....lol. and then we will compare rationale.

I agree shazzy , the 1649 lancaster was the first seed that sticks out. Heavy 1789 as the pollinator!

I cannot get over the "look" of that 1756 Lancaster. The shoulders look like concrete just like 1810. Incredible. I'd sure like to see a picture of that 1655.

I hear ya Chris! Either 1756 or 1649 are screaming potential. I figured if the 1810 showed up through the male side in the 1756, then maybe a good chance it will also carry over on the male side in the 1649. I would love someone with time to do some research on which way has carried on the heavy traits. A comparison of monster shells to the chart or light pumpkins crossed with plants that produced the monster heavy rocks, or the heavy rocks pollinated with plants that produced monster shells. The 1579 rock x shell and the 1649 is shell x rock. Maybe the answer is cross the 1579 x 1649 both ways and then cross the progeny the next season. A 440 ott at 15% equals 2100 lbs. I love letting my mind spin out on this stuff this time of the year when the stress level is low and and I have the whole winter to just crunch.

Shazzy...I think at the end of the day all the crossing is a crap shoot. Heck look at the variety that 1161 throws. Big beautiful orange balloons and big / ugly / heavy. Every crossed seed seems similar in that they are never very consistent.
Now....the selfed seeds....notice how much more consistency there is in 1725?

Yes it is always a crap shoot Chris, but like in craps and gambling, there are ways of improving the odds if certain tendencies or tells can be found. Possibilities and probabiities are 2 different beasts.

That being said, the selfing as you mentioned has worked very well so far with the 1725 at increasing the odds of higher frequency.....a wider bell curve with more room at the top instead of a narrow curve with magic bullets at the peak.
