i know about genetics ive been breeding animals long as i can rember but what baffles me is ,, once you put two heavy hitters together what do you get? if it was animals you could say,, you get something massive but since fertilizers and water and soil makes a big pumpkin what it is ,,is it really worth it to match big seeds ,,?

no world record was grown by chance. the seed stocks and pollination plants were choosen for one purpose, to cross and grow biggest of all.

when all else is equal -soil-weather-ferts-water-etc? then the seed has to be the difference between big and small.

seed history and genetic makeup is what drives the hobbys best growers.
many growers spend hundreds of dollars purchasing the seeds they want?(be it color, size or both)?
if any old seed would do there would be no need for auctions/bubble requests/club seed promos/etc.

Cojoe, I like my heavy hitter crosser to be funny, so ill usally plan that out and do some deep research all year and by going to the auctions and try to heavy hitters like a
Dave Stelts X Shazzy Shenoha ..... Or I was thinking another great heavy hitter crosser that might even be funnier ,throw a heavy hitter in there with some genetics that has gas all the time in the patch,,and maybe use like a Dick Wallace heavy hitter crosser.

Or if I want my crossers to be smart ill try to plan like a
Joel Ailts X Nic Welty type crosser....

Ps . Just havimg fun CueBall, please dont take this personal, we know what you ment to say. Lol

GeeeZ.... cueball... a bit of humor to say the least iZ good for the soul....you are correct...producing a consistent seed it was iZ going on. and building from it...

Can you imaging being lucky enough to start 5 HOT seeds..and going with the most aggressive one or two, then giving the others away......Can do with your own HOT line or one you are building and developing....

Not sure if your going to make it in this hobby then...as for as many successes you have you have just as many failures that are not in your control. Seeds that you spent hundreds on dont germinate...Neighbor sprayed 2-4-D, Hail Storms, Heat, Bugs, Disease. If you can't learn form the failures and move on its going to be a short hobby span for you.

No harm intended Cueball it is logical that a large pumpkin demonstrating the traits you are after crossed with a similar large pumpkin has the best overall chance of retaining the heavy large genes that you are after. But keep in mind that unproven seeds are just that. Sometimes it is a dead end. A more secure approach would be to cross two pumpkins that have been planted at least one season already and demonstrated consistent results.

We are entering into a 5 month period where pumpkin growers only source of related entertainment is to joke each other. There are very few if any involved with this hobby that have genuinely ill intentions. Usually just words taken the wrong way and a few that tend to exagerate things.

If you crossed a Cueball seed with a Cojoe, you wouldn't get a pumpkin, but just a big mean St Bernard.

Sorry had to.
