If your goal was to grow a very dark-orange (almost reddish) pumpkin, which 2 or 3 seeds would you pick. Grower's name and year of seed please. Thanks.

923 gerhardt 2009 has grown some really red ones like the 921 Rosa (check it out on AGGC). I also have a 777 Young now and cannot decide between the 2.

I think it went 1051lbs. Howard Dill winner at Bear Wallow Farm weight off. It was beautifull! If I had room I'd love to grow it!

Linus, how did the 777 Young hold up when it got hot? I grew the 1059 in 2011, and it tollerated heat better than any I have grown so far.

It was not to bad....Although it appreciate the 5:00 cool shower every afternoon. We had like 68 days where we did not get over a .250 inch of rain...I can only imagine if we would have had a good amount of rain fail

I'd grow 1290 Poirier, and my own 566 (1059x self). The 566 grew 3 orange and a red one last year. Here's a pic of the 566 http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=167578 I still have a bunch of seeds left if anyone's interested email wernerjo@live.com

I'll personally settle anyone's concern about the 811 Gerhardt's ability to consistantly produce HD winners in 2013 when I plant it exclusively in all 6 of my plots. It produced 2 HD awards first year out. I agree that for an unproven 2012 seed the 1048 Engel shows promise. The fact that it was selfed is encouraging.

Luke I have a theory that the big and orange ones do better in the hot South. Look at Rick Holder's NC record, and Dave Cantrelles 1050 this year. Just a thought.

the 980 Fredricks popped off deep orange for many fruit. I would say 66% of the fruit grown were red orange, and the rest were orange. It will see a lot of dirt and it also has the potential for more than just color, weight. Growing an 1100 lber on the mexico border is a big fruit.

If you could find a 919 Richards, it grew the 1159 Richards '07 which was quite dark orange. (919 Richards x 998.6 Pukos). P & P seeds use to have them.

I would throw my 218 Sandercock in there. The seed grows bright orange pumpkins and has the potential for big and Heavy. Dyberry Patches 816 off it had 2 other 400 pounders on the same plant. He won the Howard Dill with the 816 in Coop a few years back and was something like 15 percent heavy. I will be growing another 218 this year.

There are so many sweet orange crosses out there but I just don't have enough space. For 2013 I will be planting a 990 Young 2012 (1103 Young x 1059 VM), 840 Young(777 Young x 1059 VM), 723 Kaczenski and 811 Gerhardt. I would also look at 827 Gouin and 1000.5 Gansert. Forgot to add the 852 Myers. This seed seems to throw smooth pumpkins with dark reddish orange color!
