Out of these proven and un-proven seeds, I would like to hear your thoughts on potential crosses.

Proven: 1161 Rodonis, 1488 Marsh, 1495 Stelts, 1634 Werner, 1789 Wallace and 1807 Stelts.

Un-Proven: 1730 Werner, 1770 Lieber, 1775 Starr, 2009 Wallace

1161 x 1495 - could potentially grow a Big Orange Monster and you could change your name to that.

I think 1770 X 1161 could be a very nice cross.

I imagine both the growers have rolled that around their noggins over the winter too Dale. On paper it makes sense. That would be cool if multiple heavy hitters with room tried the cross. Could be similar to the 1420 x 1446 experiment from years ago.

1789 x 2009 and reverse.

These 2 seeds have shown that they are potentially the best 2 1725 seeds out of the bunch. I like that they are both crosses instead of being selfed. Just my opinion.

if i were looking for a new world record? id probably no longer plant the 1161 because even though its a great seed? if it was going to grow a 1900-2000 pounder? i think it would have done it by now.ditto for any seed thats been around for a few years and has had ample plantings by top growers.all this of course if your desire is to be a champion.

if not any of the seeds mentioned above could win you a club weigh-off for sure

personally though? speaking of the hunt for the first metric ton pumpkin? id go with any seed that had the 1725 in its last outing.
to keep the scales going upward? you need big to go into big in my opinion.

heres what ive been wondering, would it be best to cross the 1775 into its self to keep the genetic line going? look at the history of the 1725 so far. you had 1385 times self, and you get a 1725. you cross 1725 times self and you get a 1775. you cross a 1775 times self= ????. but then i could cross 1775 times 2009 and i would relieve some of the inbreading but i would loose the pure line of genetics that are in the 1775 for the next generation of seeds. another argument could be as Pap said that crossing big times big equals success. well, supprisingly, the 2009 and 1775 had the exact same ott and i believe that both of those pumpkins are neck to neck in second place for the largest pumpkin ever. that leads to the question. should i cross 1775 times self to keep the genetic line going or cross 1775 times 2009 for the next generation of big?

I'll pollinate the 2009 with the 1775, 1775 and the 1140 with the 1770, and 1770 with the 2009, if all goes well that's my line up so far. Ashton I don't think you can go wrong no matter how you cross 'em!

Pap's I agree with you after talking to Ron at the conference. At some point you have to stop stepping back to old seeds , when the new crosses have everything that they need to push the envelope forward. Move on to the new generation. They have most of the past in them. Se levie, don't look back.
