Because it was grown for genetic purposes. So it could be grown this year. Winter greenhouse growing is no easy task.

Wasn't grown for size...grown for seed maturity reasoning.

Small or young, you say both Cueball? Viable seeds can be obtained from pumpkins younger than that, and if you meant small, much smaller than that.

In 2008, I carried my 50 out of the patch under one arm. I pollinated it August 11th, so it barely had time to grow. It still had over 200 mature seeds. When I grew two seeds from it, in 2010, one of them grew a 1067 & the other grew a 1308 for me. The great genetics from the 1385 Jutras ( pollinator )were intact!

Sounds like the 50 Todd? That's proof what these beasts can do.

Yes Luke, that's the one. It's been a hard seed to germinate, but if it pops, watch out! The size of the mother pumpkin doesn't matter, if the great genetics are there, on both sides of the family! Environmental factors had everything to do with why the 50 was only 50 lbs. It was way, way out, on an extremely big plant, with a lot of other pumpkins sucking on that plant. Then, the late pollination of nearly mid-August gave it very little time ( in our harsh climate, especially! )-to have much hope of maturing before our icy cold October nights arrived!
