this the 1770 lieber plant about 14 days old or so ...it looks like 2 mains are starting at the same time ...but are unattached from each other..is this a normal rare thing.. or is it going to become a ribbon /flat /double vine...any thoughts would be appreciated.. I had high hopes for this one ..thanks

Dale, I had a similar problem last year in that I was getting double everything for the first 4-5 nodes after which the plant grew as normal. Plus side is that I had a few extra leaves and vines to train back.

Its not the best of photo's and I wish I had more.

The top two leaves in this photo are twin leaves.

The doubling up became more prominent later on but sadly I deleted tons of photo's. You'll have to study the picture to notice

It is possible the main growing point was damaged and two side vines are trying to grow instead.

Hey Dale. Not to put down anyone's seed but i would not look at that plant for another second. That plant is definitely not the start i would be looking for!!! I would pull that 1770 and start another one if you have it.Just my opinion.

hey Carl
I started 3 1811's and they are all growing with more vigor than the rest of my line up, was going to keep the best, but may grow all 3 this year. How do yours look compared to others you have growing? I have high hopes for this seed and will plant it every year that I have seeds for. Sorry for high jacking your post Dale. Have you asked Charlie if he has any extra's? If I knew it would make the trip I'd mail you my backup 1770's, they all look good but half the size of the 1811.

Dale looks like a true double which is better than flat vine imho. You can let it grow out some to see if you get two vines with a normal layout. If you see mutation on either of the two vines give up on it.

Thanks for the feedback...Carl its to late for me start another one .. so I was thinking along the lines of cojoe'a advice and let it grow in the 7 gallon pot for a while and see how it turns out..dandy since your problem persisted I got a feeling ,mine will to I'm hoping wilbur is right and some how the main was damage under the halide ..if a normal growth pattern emerges .. then maybe it will see dirt

With allthe grafting being done. Can you split it , and do a graft to one vine. Jim

Scott, my 1770 is starting to look more normal, with a true main starting to develop , to late for me but you might still have a shot at growing it this year

The good news is mine is actually starting to split into two mains so I may just try to cut it back to one and see how it does. Really odd though.

At which node did it start to look normal Dale?

Fortunately I have two 1770's planted together but I'll keep a close eye on them.

However, both my 980's were very slow to grow and had very curled/crunched up cots, one of which had a hole in it. Coincidence with both?

Dake,
my 1495 did the same thing, It through weird double leaves and looked messed up. I had to make tuff decision and culled. NOT worth the touble. Good luck, Also my 1495 was stuck at 2nd leaf stage for a week and a half. I know you are talking about the 1770, but i stared 2 1495's and had similar issues. It was tuff, but I do not want to deal with potentail flat vine and double issues later on in the season when it really counts. When we get into selfed genetics we run into all sorts of issues.

Nicholas

p.s. Grow your 1723

Start a few and see what happens. I will definetley grow this plant again. you can not go wrong with he pure power and growth rate of the 1634. Especially coming from a 1700 (+) lb pumpkin. I would personally focus on you 1723
Hard work, good luck and tough decesions.

Nicholas

Best of luck this year!!! with yur 931, great potential

lol.. tonite I planted the 1770 in the GH... it had 2 sets of double leaves..but that was it ..it now has a single normal looking main forming ..side vines look ok.. since it won't be my main plant.. I'm going to give it a try..if it shows any more abnormalities I'll yank it since it's sharing space in the GH anyway .. all I need it to do is reach 1288 lbs( hello nikiski..lol..) genetics can be a funny thing.. I would still like to get a pumpkin off it
