The pumpkin season is coming to an end and that means seed research is on the increase. The diary of Howard Dill Award Winning Pumpkins is a great resource for those growers looking for some pretty pumpkins, but there can be only one winner at each weigh-off. So, what I was wondering is if links could be posted to pumpkins that were contenders that just might have missed out on the top spot.

I know at some of the weigh-offs I have judged there are often more than one great looking pumpkin and I want this post to try and broaden the potential selection process for those seeking orange color. So, if you feel you grew a pumpkin that was in contention for a Howard Dill award, or know of a pumpkin that was worthy of consideration, please post a link to a picture and any genetic information you may know. Thanks!

http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=210462 This was my son's pumpkin, grown on a seed from my 919.5 McWilliams 2011, and pollinated by his 866.5 McWilliams 2010. Both of the parent pumpkins were bright orange, but didn't have this nice shape.

Matt,, thanks for the plug..Both the 960 offspring and the 483 had some of the best color I have seen this year, little short on size, but that's why we have next year..

It´s great to find my seed on this list, thank you Bart for growing the 738.5 this year (thus proving that it can produce heavy + shiny orange again), and thank you Matt for pointing out what Bart has grown on his 150 sqft patch. For those who get interested in the 738.5 Wagler seed, I still have plenty of those seeds left, they simply wait for growers who wanna give them a go.

This one off the 1290 Poirier never got weighed. It got carved and was a shame to see her go.
