Maybe this has been covered already but I don't see anything on first page
For those Orange growers;
What are your plans for 2014, goals, crosses?
I have 53 seeds to choose 3 or 4 from. Guess we'll see how that goes

I have the same dilemma as you; too many good seeds and not enough patches to grow them. Going with the 1048 Engel for orange in one patch since Shannon practically guarantees an HD with it. Going for size in my other two patches.

This year I have to limit the orange because of my master gardener endeavors but I am going with:
777 young 1217 Gerhardt which is the reverse cross of my 811 811 Gerhardt and 809 young for backups

Gary, because there's orange and there's ORANGE. Because there are sure things and there are maybe's. I gambled on the 1332 and won, but it may be a few years before I place that bet again! That said I always have an eye on the unexpected big seed that hits orange, to consider for a future pollinator!

I also think the 1048 is a sure bet. The 777 young is consistent to start and that the 1048 Engel was a beauty of a selfed 777 should seal the deal!

My goal is to keep the orange, add the weight gradually.
I'm taking a chance with the 1770 Lieber, keeping orange with 1662 Stelts, 1432 Northrup, and 1290 Poirier. Back ups will be my Minor 912, 636, and 562. 562(1250 Kline x 1059 Vincent-McGill) is a consistent orange producer so far.
Crosses will be determined in part by timing of male and female flowers.

If I go orange, it will be the 400 Zunino x 777 Young. 777 would have to be grown on side just for pollinating reasons since I have little room.

Go 980 fredricks in the fredricks patch for big and orange. A fun seed to grow and my best pumpkin ever in 12 years growing. She will be crossed with a the 1985 miller.

My Favorites so far at the moment that I have the option to plant:
960 Gansert: mother of my HD winner in 2013 334 Arnold (960 Gansert x 1131 Gansert) 766 Geyelin (1290 Poirer x 400 Frei) 904 Northrup (670 Daigle x 965 Northrup) 993 Vincent-McGill (772 Poirer x 998 Pukos) 400 Frei 777 Young (993 v/m x 1059 v/m) 840 Young (777 Young x 1059 v/m) 1662 Stelts (904 Stelts x 1350 Starr) 754 Schweigert 10 (110 Schweigert x 993 v/m) 890 Stucker (670 Daigle x 670 Daigle) 600 Molter 500 Northrup (1230 Daletas x 670 Daigle) 1059 Vincent-McGill (993 v/m x 904 stelts)
tell me that isn't a hard list to pick from
Definate seeds that will be grown are:
1059 v/m 334 Arnold

If and when I grow again I want to cross old with new. Steve Daletas was awesome enough to throw a 1016 Daletas and a 1230 Daletas my way. Assuming they pop, a cross with one of John Youngs 777 or 840 or a Gerhardt 811 or 827 seems like a hit to me.

Good thread. All orange threads are good.
Last year I grew a 608 Ollila, and it was the best plant I ever grew. So I'm growing it again.
I'm growing my own 500 which grew on the 608 and was pollinated with the 1432 Northrup. I grew it, so I gotta grow it.
I have room for a few more, and so I will be contacting a few of those who have a stash of orange seeds.

I like the 1544 Revier. ive grown it twice , one went like 17% heavy the other was 5% light. both were over 1000 lb. and the plant on both was real healthy...I think it would make a great pollinator for a real orange producer like the 1059 V/G or 1048 Engel or 811 Gerhardt or any of the really orange producers... http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=208583

I'm riding with the Wiz.....looking for both big and orange. I'm anxious to see what I get from my 1327.5 Rea 13. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=210947. The pollinator is the 979 McMillan 12, which is the brightest orange I've seen grown from a 1634 Werner. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryView.asp?season=2013&grower=36007&action=L

There are so many great Orange choices out there. My goal for 2015 is to grow lesser known seeds to see what they can produce.
For those looking for a great seed, grow the 960 Gansert. It grew my HD winner and also a few others in 2013. Easiest plant in the patch; was never affected by the extreme heat we had and it was started end of May. I have a feeling it could be one of the most consistent seeds out there for shape and color. I'll be growing it again in the future

I grew the 1028 Gienger a few years ago, crossing it with the 1432 Northrup. I cracked the main vine twice, killing my chances of growing anything of size.
But I still grew a beautiful orange fruit that taped 487. Picture is in my 2013 diary.
