What is the relationship of the number of female blossom segments to the number of segments of the pumpkin? Are they one for one? Is it worthwhile pollinating a female blossom with just 3 segments? I suppose the larger the number of pumpkin segments has a better potential of producing a larger pumpkin.

three segment pumpkins dont seem to do well for most growers. four and/or five are the usual and six sometimes.
a four segment fruit will have four pockets of seeds inside - etc-etc. depending on total segments ( lobes)
most of the top pumpkins have been on either four or five segment pumpkins.
probably due to the fact most keepers are four or five seg.

Cut your cullZ in half and check out the relationship of the flower lobeZ and the internal segmentZ of the fruit. One can even see the seedZ starting to form...and deformities that will develope. CHeck out my diary for some pics

ive been watching lobes in female vs seed numbers shape and outside ribs of pumpkin and have found zero evidence to ever support that the lobes in a female have anything to do with shape, size or final seed count or for that matter number of ribs on the exterior of the pumpkin.
