This morning I did the following ...... 1730 Werner x 1290 Poirier using a single male which did not have an enormous amount of pollen in.

I thought it best not to chance the pollination and decided to follow up with two males from an 854 Frei (1231 Pukos x 1450 Wallace) which were packed with pollen.

I wonder if theory has moved on or not with regards to the idea that different lobes of the flower could be pollinated by different pollinators so that a row of seeds from one lobe could potentially be 1730 x 1290 and some could be 1770 x 854?

Either way you're not going to know until you grow enough of the seed and it's purely academic but just wondered.

Ive been told its one pollen grain for each seed. Don't know if its truth.

I often wondered as well. So I decided to carefully pollinate (within reason) 1 lobe of a triamble squash with AG pollen and self the other 2 lobes. Seed retrival from the distinct lobes would be easy. If the seeds from the selfed lobes were contaminated with AG pollen the progeny would not be green. So far seed from the crossed lobe are growing round yellow fruit and the seed from the selfed lobe are growing green 3 lobed fruit. So, in my opinion, it is possible. Distinguishing the progeny from the cross you made would be much more difficult.

Shame on the 1730. So,if I plant one next it will be a case of 'who's the father?'

Now imagine if there was genetic testing for pumpkins, sort of like a paternity test

Sorry dandy,I miss understood your question. I believe you could successfully do what you suggested.Would require a small applicator to not cross contaminate pollen. Youd have to mark the pumpkin while it was growing to keep tabs of what pollen to what lobe. And then youd have to dissect the pumpkin accurately to get the corresponding lobe/row of seeds. Neat idea
