I would like to hear opinions on the subject of any 2009 x 2009 crosses or any "Selfed" for that matter being as genetically sound as "Thee original 2009 or any Selfed" seed. Do genetics fade away in some respect or are they somewhat preserved since they are selfed? #2, If all growers that controlled pollinated their 2009 crosses accordingly would they all still hold the incredible growing genes that thee original 2009 seems to carry no matter who grew and crossed them? #3 Would they be considered sibs and would they all have the same potential?Alot to chew I know but what says You

I made a 282est seed which grew from a cutting(clone) from the plant that grew the 2009 and was selfed.The seeds were less than fully mature. There was a wide range of plants from the seed,some weird ones and plenty that didn't sprout.Scott holub had a 1478 on it and my fruit split(blossom) in early September-was 407 inches. I think, especially in a cutting vs from seed the genetics are preserved.Having said that there still is a wide range of variation in a selfed seed-more than I would expect.

My 1395.5 is the 2009 selfed went 3% heavy I hope to grow it next year.It maybe a good one.I dont think anything is lost in the genetics.It was a late pollination.

Farming- a bunch of catastrophies that result in a lifestyle

While my weight on this little lady, the (817 Bond) may not seem very spectacular....the conditions it did this with are:
It was a 619 Glasgow, which was of course a selfed 2009
It grew on unamended soil- nothing in it. It had 92 square feet of plant, and when the vine rotted out it was still doing about 13 pounds a day at DAP 71. I dried out the seeds, and then did a germ test: They all germinated, and I left one of them in the small bag of potting soil I germed them in 'just to see what would happen'. *Cough* the first female showed up yesterday....this seed is SO hitting dirt next year! Can't wait to see what it does on good dirt. So far: the germination baby is acting EXACTLY like momma did.

You grew a clone from the 1725 Harp 09, which is a selfed 1385.5 Jutras 07! So you did a stretto bred Jutras, and that is a true variety now, if you selfed your clone.
But it has nothing to do with the 2009, Sir.
When I grew a stretto 1385.5 Jutras 07 from the 1172 Singleton 09, it is a sibbling of the same variety you grew.
My 612 Ammer 14 UOW was grown wild without fattening methods and in very poor soil. I don´t think that much of the hybrid vigor from the 1385.5 is lost in your or my fruit, but there has to be used a great pollinator to produce a heavy hitter out of this stretto bred seed...like for the 2009 there was the great 1409.5 Miller 10 onto the selfed 1385.5 Jutras.
What real 2009 x self and variations bring, shows Beni Meier but not I with grandmother´s stretto or your mother´s selfing, Joe.

Selfing is like anything else, sometimes it works sometimes it does not. Some selfed seeds produce consistanly the same results or better than the original seed. Some selfed seeds don't produce anything. If you can find a 2009 x 2009 that produces a few good offspring, it should produce many.

I grew three 1725's three years in a row. None of them where the same plant or fruit. Neither where they like CoJoes 1725 a few years ago which was closer to the 1725 that grew Rons WR and Joes clone this year. ItZ a roll of the dice on genetics, and you dont really get to know till later in the grow that you should of pollinated with that other Choosen one in the patch. How many dominate traits dont show up until the second year? So many ?'s

I believe that the final weight is not so much caused by the seed as it is by the belief of the grower in the seed. If you think that the seed will produce something large, you are more likely to grow something large. The only reason why you don't normally see 2009 x self offspring pumpkins being too large is because not too many of those 2009 x self seeds were grown, and therefore did not produce overly large offspring. That being said, the seed does contribute slightly to the size of the pumpkin, due to the breeding of larger pumpkins every year. The 2009 is a good seed, in fact probably one of the best seeds so far,and I think that this is evident by the weights that it has produced. So to answer your question, a 2009 x self seed can baisically take three routes: it could be worse than the original 2009, roughly the same, or better. This is due to genetic variation, which occurs inevery seed, and is the same reason why brothers of the same parents dont look exactly the same.

Good input!!! Averaging out your comments brings me to the conclusion, (to qoute from WiZzzy)," Itz a roll of the dice", hence its called a Gamble when it comes to planting a selfed seed. Thanks for your comments, it helps me go forward on both the 2009 & 1385.5 variant selfed seeds.

If anyone is interested in growing a 2009 x 2009 My 1223 is available.

It was grown on 290 square feet in a climate where our average high temperature in August is 74 degrees. It is my biggest pumpkin ever by over 400 pounds.
