Is there a way to tell when a fruit is very young if it is likely to be white or have some orange color. I have seen several very young fruit that are very yellow while others are quite pale. Are the very yellow ones likely to be orange? thanks

its been our experience that yes small yellow pumpkins will normally turn out a range of orange.

we also look at the side vines and the young main.
light green vines usually produce off color pumpkins while yellow vines produce some good to fair pumpkin color.

with all the genetic milk shakes and inbreeding created over the last ten years, its a wonder we get any big ones with good color.

i commend those that are constantly trying top improve the great orange color lines.

unfortunatly once you breed for size like ron and i there seems to be a very small selection of seed stock to improve
both size and color.

Thats what mind-boggling to me...

The 1817 McConkie was a beautiful orange color worthy of a
Howard Dill Award..

Pap, It was grown off your seed (1623.5 Wallace X 1985 Miller) I grew the 1623 as well and it was White as a Puff Ball you can find in the Fall..

That said is it the pollinator, soil condition, or just a crapshoot to what color lines you get?

the family lines for many of our top seeds have been crossed and in bred over and over so its to be expected that the same seed stock could produce mixed color results.

I´ve bred C. pepo and C. maxima pure yellow, and I did it with AGs too. Maturing color (more then 100 DAP) is a really deep yellow with schlieren of orange on top of the ribs only.
You can produce such a nice colored fruit with the 140 Rahe 14 pollinated by the 1723 Marshall 11 or it´s offspring 391 Otnes 13.
