Any thoughts out there on the most expensive seeds sold in auctions so far this winter? Below are mine.(#'s 7-9)

7) 1495 Stelts $225
Like the 1725 Harp, there are likely not many more out there available to be grown. However, since it was so heavy to chart, and is responsible for growing many others that were heavy to chart, it's easy to still see why many would like to still include this seed in their future growing plans.

8) 1873 Steil (note: auctioned only in groups, not as a single seed) $200, $200, & $110
The 1873 Steil has the 2009 Wallace as its mother and the 2328 Meier as its father. That's the same genetic background as the 2323 Meier. If you really desire having the 2323 Meier due to its genetics, but cannot afford the cost, this may be a nice cheaper alternative.

9) 1730.5 Werner $165, $165, $120, $120, & $115
I believe that this seed is highly underrated. Other than the distant 1725 Harp genetics a few generations back, it doesn't have any of the others ranked ahead of it listed above in its background. This seed also produced the 2008 pound Neptune. Personally, due to the lack of 2009 genetics in its background, I view this seed as an ideal one to cross with something containing the 2009 background if interested in introducing some greater genetic diversity. It has produced five pumpkins over 1700 pounds in weight, which I believe is either equal or greater than any other proven seed out there with the exception of the 2009 Wallace. Even more impressive is the thought that it did all of this while possibly being grown only a fraction as much as most of the other proven seeds listed above. It also seems to tend to grow heavier than its estimates. I'm surprised that this seed has not received much more attention.

I don't have any thoughts but this is a pretty sweet list...

As PurplePumpkin points out the 1873 Steil has been auctioned as a group with the 1666.5 Steil and the 1662 Steil. The 1873 was the third largest 2009 kin grown in 2014, was grown in poor weather and has the 2328 as the pollinator. Certainly it has great potential. Take a look at Scott Steil's BP diary under Mn Fisher to see the 1873 but more importantly to see the 1666,5 and 1662. The 1666.5 was a 1623 Wallace selfed and had " endless potential " according to Scott. I think the 1662 is the gem in this group. It is in my opinion one of the two best heavy, round and orange kins grown in 2014. It's mother is the 1676.5 Daletas with the 1873 as the father. It is a gorgeous kin. Seed count was very low- Scott has quit filling requests for clubs and only has a dozen or so left in his private stock.

Correction - the 1662s father was the 2009 that grew the 1873.

Yes Scott has some good looking kins.Heavy orange genetics clear to see they should grow big heavy orange kins. The 1495 is great to heavy up your line or the 1625 Ganter would be a great maybe better substitute. My 1947.5 is highly under rated. We will see in 2015 just how much?
