This topic has been popular for the last six years so I am going to post it again as this is typically the time of year most growers are starting to look at what they may want to plant in the future.

There have been many great pumpkins grown and I am always interested to see which seed the grower themselves has the most confidence in.

This is your chance to tell other growers about your seeds. Let everyone know which seed of yours you like, the cross, and why. It can be proven or unproven the key part is that you have confidence in it.

As we know, the growers themselves know their plants the best so let us all know which one of your seeds is your pick.

I think my 1000.5 is a pretty good choice for consistent orange and shape. It has a couple HDs to it's credit, one of them being this years cross 1000.5 x 993 V/M which I will grow next season ...

2332 Graham! Me thinks if this pumpkin wasn't grown in gravel and starved for organics it could have bin even bigger.

1965 Brandt will be a key pollinators for future generations of fruit with only 65 viable seeds this seed needs to be grown by a few top growers to get these heavy genetics in the gene pool of a seed like the 2036 which produced large otts but was going to chart imagine 480 ott at 29% heavy..

2185 Brandt... 19% heavy Plant was amazing with no disease or any issues I cant wait to see what is produces for off spring... Both the 1965 and 2185 were pollinated by my 2323 I had growing and it was a beast est just under 1000 at day 42 when it bes,,walls of the 2323 were thick 10-20% over imo,, the 2323 plant was unbelievable I truly believe it made a great pollinators

The 1965 will be at a few auctions, but the majority will be sold for a fundraiser.

My 438 Chandler(Terminator)13%heavy and 504 Chandler(Rocky)1%heavy are awesome pumpkins. Terminator had low seed count of 63 that were fully developed, but each one has a thick shell and sound dense when drop tested. The genetics are 1916 Barron x self. The color is a orangeish-yellow with green and red speckles. Rocky had a high seed count of 876 that were fully developed. The genetics are 1513 Sherwood x self, the color is orange with some green on some of the scaring. Both of the pumpkins have the 2009 Wallace in their genetics. I will send some seeds in the Exotic Seed Exchange from Rocky, not sure if I want to send seeds from Terminator.

I am real happy with several of my orange crosses but I would have to say the 823 est House 15( 811 Gerhardt x 359 Foss ) is one of my favorites. Do a germination test now to see how good the seed is.

This coming year I'll grow one of my own seeds, it's the 1300 UOW Bernstrom. This will be the first time I grow one of my own seeds. It's cross is the 1916 x 2058, it was 14% heavy and developed a small pinhole in the blossom around day 50. I'm excited to grow it because I think it has lots of potential with the heavy Barron and the big Hawkley. It had a long wide shape to it and had 2 months to grow when it developed the small pinhole.

proven is still best chance in my humble opinion. unproven? is just unknown potential.a risk for those with limited garden space.

we plant heavy on the proven side and lightly on the unproven side of the seed charts.(eliminates a lot of possible disappointment)

most new growers i would think would prefer growing a seed thats got a good history verses the unknown

having said this, i give a lot of credit to a grower that is willing to develop their own seed line.as i always say" if you dont plant it ? how can you expect others to?"

we all plant for different reasons. some for pretty, some for heavy, some for shape, some for a certain cross, some just for fun and some to compete, etc.

Thanks abbynormal for the tag;-)

I am having a hard time deciding between two of my pumpkins, so I am going to mention them both. At this time I have not been able to see both internally, nor do I know the seed counts from both of them, but I am still excited that my original early spring plan worked out.

My two seeds that I would like to mention are my...

1662.5 DeBacco ’15 (F: 1676.5 Daletas x 1916 Barron) 19% over chart
and my
1662.0 DeBacco ’15 (F: 1916 Barron x 1676.5 Daletas) 13% over chart

Both of these pumpkins are not only very similar in final weight but both went heavy for their size and I was able to cross them both together and make the reverse cross also. My hope is for some increased genetic variability with these two seed lines with both having the trait of the high percent heavy. As of right now, I plan on planting at least one of these. For increased structural support I like dense pumpkins and bringing these two lines together I think was a good idea.

For those growers looking to increase their odds of having their pumpkin go heavy for its estimate, I think this may be a very good start toward achieving that goal;-)

noticed that you like to plant the 1676.5 Daletas seed Matt! What is it about the 1676.5 that you find so appealing ? I have one and have been thinking about growing it. Carl

1162.5 Podraza 2015 16% heavy, 1738 Barron x 1916 Barron
I liked the 1730 werner that grew the 1738 and being pollinated with a 2009 that grew the 1916 at 20% heavy. I think the 1738 was under-planted this year. Getting something like a 2230 Wallace(1916 pollinator) as a pollinator would be great to introduce the heavy of rons 2009 and stabilize the heavy of the 1916 in the seed.
Mine threw long orange and heavy, the 1916 pollinator would have been the same but went down early

The 359 Foss was a good one for big and orange. My 1047.5 McWilliams is a selfed 359, so hopefully it will retain the orange trait. I think it went light due to heavy June rains and nutrient leaching. I also grew a 962.5 on the 1493 Witter-Benson (selfed 2009) and pollinated it with the 359 (1/2 2009. It grew on a secondary after wind broke the main, and I missed culling one fruit that went about 500#. Hopefully it can achieve 2009 size with the orange. But it will need to have some grown to see if that works.
