question ;if you grow a great genetic seed say a 1725harp under less than idea conditions; poor soil;poor care; it gets to #800 do you think that would affect the genetic potential of the seeds produced from this selfed pumpkin. this may have been ansered before but i did not see it. thank you for your imput

No, genetics will not change (unless the environmental effects would cause enhanced mutation etc.), but that doesn´t seem to apply in this case.

Getting someone to plant and grow a world record with it maybe a different story.

okso you are saying i think that under the same growing conditions that my 819 seeds would have the same poteintial to grow to 1817 as the mother seed had. thanks guys

1) Nobody knows which potential the mother seed had had, because the seed you had grown was unique, every other seed of the same seed stock has a different mix of genetics (despite the same parents), the bunch of seeds are like brothers and sisters...same parents, totally different traits, but sometimes very similar.
2) The seeds out of your 819 pumpkin combine the genetics of the plant it was grown on and of the pollinator plant, and again each seed will have a unique mix of genetics (even in case of a x self pollination).

The only thing one can say is that your plant, which grew the 819 under bad conditions (according to your interpretation) must therefore have had good genetics. Hence, the seeds in this pumpkin could also have a good mix of genetics, because the genes which made your pumpkin grow like you observed could be in the new seed you are growing, maybe they are not, maybe they are in two-fold load...each seed is unique.

...it´s the same with the 1725 Harp...each seed out of the 1725 Harp fruit has (or had...which probably applies to most of them now) its own mix of genetisc and therefore its individual potential. Only one thing is for sure: The great genetics of the 1385 Jutras plant which grew the 1725 Harp and the x self pollination caused a bunch of seeds in which a large fraction had inherited a highly favorable mix of genetics for growing a big one.

Excellent description Pumpking. For reference to the question. Does your 819 have the potential to grow a large pumpkin. Look at 2014 there is a mother seed. 798 Theobald that grew a 1582.5 Theobald. So anything is possible.

This year four of the pumpkins of 2,000 pounds were grown form the growers own seed.
Three from Pumpkins over 2,000 pounds, Only one from a pumpkin under 2,000 pounds.
Our 1338 Martin was grown in the poorest spot in the garden. Look what it produced.
Make a good cross. And grow your own.

I totally agree with Glen, growing your own seeds also gives to you the opportunity to make a selection between more seeds and seedlings of the same cross. Keeping the strongest and the best looking one you would have better odds to have a good result at the end of the season. You MUST have good skills and be dedicated on that hobby! Many other variables have to be on your side though. Just try to keep under control the ones you can and wish yourself good luck on the ones you can`t.
