If you have 2 different seeds, and the crosses are the same (example, both seeds are 723 Bobier X 845 Bobier) and lyou crossed these seeds, would that give positive or negitive effects or wouldn't it matter?

The 2 seeds would be from different pumpkins, not from the same pumpkin, so I don't think it's considered a sib.

dave, are you trying to say that grower x and grower y both grew a 723(f) x 845 and you got seeds from both growers then you planted a seed from each of the growers and crossed them would it give you a super seed ? i wish i knew ! i think genetics is a factor in getting a big pumpkin but you need the whole package of good soil, good weather, and some good luck along with the knowledge of what to do when stuff goes haywire

Randy, I don't have seeds like that, but I was wondering what a cross like that would do.

I do think you are right, and it goes along with the survey Nic Welty is running on another board. What percentage of the total package is seed, enviroment, luck ect....

Thanks...

Dave

By doing that cross your reducing the grandparents from 8 possibilties down to 4. This is useful in creating a more stable output of progeny. It either compounds good traits or bad (hopefully good). From here you can branch out in a few different ways. You can inbreed a few more generations to go for a vigor cross down the road or you can alternate crossing with heavy pumpkins and then inbreeding the next generation. Personally I'd aim to get those grandparents down to 2 first. Always remember that there are NO absolute answers in pumpkin growing. All you can do is increase your odds for success by wise crossing practices.

those fruit are more like cousins, so i guess that would be a southern pollination? lol

Randy, thanks for the offer. Thanks to the many very generous growers around here, I have plenty of seeds. It was more of a hypothetical question.
