A while back (before I knew much about "hot" seeds) I purchased some seeds from P&P Seeds. One is a "723 Bobier 1999 Offspring." What in the heck does this mean? Is it a real 723 Bobier, or is it a seed from a 723 Bobier seed (the next generation), or does it mean something else? I really doubt that I got a real 723 Bobier for $15, but I would like to know what it is. Thanks.

There are over 75 1st generation pumpkins from the 723 listed on the AGGC site. Your seeds could be from any one of them. In my humble opinion, seeds from P&P are good seeds....just not likely to grow a "world record". Genetics are not usually a high priority item for an "average gardener".

It's not a 723, just the child of one. You will probably have to contact Ray Waterman to ask about complete genetic information. I know a bunch of his seeds are listed that way and it always puzzled me because everyone I know wants to know what pumpkin the seeds come from.

Stan,

I know it's a technicality but the 845 Bobier was sold at P&P and has set one world record so far. You could get 2 seeds for $20 even after the 1260 Weir was weighed. I bought four at the time and couldn't believe I spend $40 on seeds! Now I wish I bought them all :P

And before anyone asks I don't have any left. I killed one and the other three have already found other homes.

All the offspring seeds were open pollinated. Probably have good genetics, but unknown. They are intended for the slightly less competitive grower. The 801.5 Stelts Offspring (801.5 Stelts x open) did grew 1047 Wayne Peters. So the genes are there.

Brent,
Thank you for that additional input regarding the Bobier
845 seed. I stand by my statement, "not likely to grow a world record". I believe that most of the serious growers would agree with that statement. Most(I did not say "all") serious growers do not grow "open pollenated" seed....correct?

A quick comment in regards to Stans first statement. Your seeds are most likely none of the 75 first generation seeds on AGGC. Since Waterman grew these for seed, I doubt they were recorded at any weighoff or weighed period.

I had a note last year from Ray that stated they were open pollinated, but open within a few very top seeds (801.5 stelts, 723 Boier, 1097 beachy and the other possible combinations listed in "The Great Ones" on their web site.

Just fyi...
ps. I noticed that AGGC shows the 1016 Deletes with nothing under 1000#. But Dills are selling 3 1016 protegeny under 1000: 932 Dill (1016 x810 Dill), 636 Dill (x 940 Mombert) and 559 Dill (x810 Dill). I doubt Dills and/Waterman list anything but their very top pumpkins on AGGC and they would not be the 2 for $5 seeds.

Stan,

You are right, I don't think there is much interest in open pollinated seeds. Especially when ones with known parentage are so readily available.

We will probably never see the likes of the 845 Bobier come from there again (just my opinion).

The 735 Pukos seeds were 3 for $6 from Dills just a couple years ago. Not a bad price.... As were the 802 Dills last year and some other pretty good seeds.

There were actually 2 different Bobier 845 seeds (1999 and 2000). As I recall, the ones sold by P&P were not the 2000 845 that went on to grow many giants but instead were the 1999 845. I bet that many people bought these thinking that they had struck gold.

The 2000 and the 1999 were both grown from the 935 lloyd 97. The male polinator was different, but who knows. Maybe it just hasn't been planted as much. Has anyone planted it?

Im pretty sure the 845's sold by P&P were 2000 seeds, not 1999 seeds.
