My 1230 is doing some strange stuff. It has one ribbon vine, a second vine that is doubling, and a third vine that looks like it may be normal. Has anyone had similar experiences with this plant?

Russ, I've heard about quite a few people having trouble with this plant. I'm growing the 1230 myself and it has been a very temperamental sucker. No signs of a flat vine or double here yet, but it just refuses to lay down without trying to kink. The vine is also trying to twist itself, making the problem worse. I'm making progress on getting it down, but of the 4 plants I'm growing this is the only one that's still not on the ground.

This plant is making this rookie struggle to keep it under control!!

Brian, I just did a little surgery to remove the ribbon vine and the vine that was doubling. My ribbon vine was also twisting back into the stump and downward. I must say that the plant looks much better with the strange stuff cut off. It is/was a very vigorus plant but looked more like a bush than a pumpkin plant because it had all of these vines and doubling leaves. I still think it has good potential if what I just did to it doesn't stunt it too badly.

my 1230 main went crazy as well, looks like I got it back after a little vine surgery.

my 1016 daletas was a monster plant, it mutated badly too and I had a terrible time with the vines being stubborn. I had to tear it out it got so bad. Seems to be lots of mutations from these pumpkins, they are sisters:) Jimmy

I grew the 1230 last year and had many of the same problems that Brian describes above. I remember the vine being about 12-15 feet long and still having the last 3 feet supported by bamboo sticks trying to lay it down without snapping it off. I had double vine tendencies too. Very hard to set a pumpkin on it. It was a challenge.

My 1230 has a ribbon vine. I just set it out May 17. I'll have to see if I get a decent secondary vine to grow as a main. Otherwise, I'll pull it up. I have a 1028.8 Carlson (1230 x self) next to it that's growing normally.

My 1230 looks like it is going ribbon as well. Thanks Gads for the encouraging story though.

my only good looking plant in the main patch looks like it will Ribbon or double vine. it's my 1016. Kind of like a line runing though the middle of the vine. Anything I can do?!?!

yeah, that's weird. My 1230 is the most vigorous in my patch as well. Are plants that ribbon typically vigorous? is there a correlation?

Wow, that's a lot more problems than I thought I would see in this thread. The 1230 is a proven seed that has grown many nice pumpkins but I guess it's a crap shoot when it comes to mutations. I only have another 8" or so to go before the main is on the ground and I'm hoping it doesn't get funky on me. Time will tell I guess.

Good luck with it!

My 1016 is also a flat vine. Hope it pulls out but it's not looking good.

My 1016 is doing all of the above. It has split into 2 nice vines, which I will cut one of them off. The big problem is how the first 2-3 feet of the vine is kinked.

My 1016 was a dream plant last year even with me cracking the main 3 ft out. But this years 1016 double at about 3 ft out, tryed to split the tip but wasen't successful.Tryed the furthest secondary out on the main it also doubled after a couple of leaves. Now I'm at 1 ft from the stump with a secondary that has about five leaves. So far looking good. Best of luck to all. Joe

Joe: What did you grow on your 1016 last year and what were the positive characteristics of the plant?

Vineman it was a very strong healthy plant that was very heat tolerant. The pumpkin had a beautiful stem and blossom end and great color, with know doubling vines.

The 1230 I grew last year was a trans plant after being in the ground all of may in 5gal gopher basket double planted. The 790 I was growing at my work patch(not in a basket) was taken out by a gopher over the 2003 Memorial day weekend. The 1230 had a 1ft main when dugup. After that it flatvined which was cut off and let the secondary take over which came out ok.Then nothing would set on the main.I did set one on the first secondary 4ft from the stump. That ended up my 620.I Would say work with it, you just never know what may end up with.
