I'm interested in doing a cross next year, that would have a good chance or producing seed that would result in nice shaped, orange pumpkins.
Would you suggest crossing two seeds that are both known to produce these types of pumpkins? Or would selfing a seed of one of these strains be a better choice? Maybe it's more complicated than this.

Its a crap shoot on the breeding game...Even when it is a proven seed the sometimes go the other way. Although 846 Calai or 801.5 Stelts normally throw beautiful ones. One of the best color years I had was with The Kilbert 673 and 634. 1074 Calai, 869.5 Calai. I dont grow it unless its looks like it will be orange.

Also 1016 Daletas, 810 Dill, 300 Mongeon, 940 Mombert are good parents for big orange pumpkins.

But there are also exceptions (810, 1016)...check out my diary...
801.5 seems to be the only orange producing seed without any exceptions.

Shannon is right it is always a crap shoot.

This year I'm doing what you have intentions for next.
With the 961 Daletas & 735 Pukos.

Any seed with the 801.5 Stelts in it's direct background has great chances for good orange color.

Must be Orange for me too!

Thanks for the replies!
Maybe the only way to be sure of getting nice shape and color, is to self or sib a pumpkin strain, selecting for shape and color, for a number of generations, until you have a stable line. I'm guessing it would take maybe 5 years to stabilize what you are looking for. Kind of like when you plant a Howden, you know what to expect.
The number of plants needed in the selection process may be quite a lot, to give us what we're looking for. Or maybe we would get lucky, by sibbing two plants each year, or selfing one plant each year.
Does anyone know of anyone who has created a stable line of AG seed? If so, what qualities were selected for?
I'm thinking the generic AG's sold at retail stores, might be a genetically stable line, but I'm only guessing.
I've also been thinking that if you could get two genetically stable lines of AG's, that were selected for different traits, and genetically(relatively) quite unrelated, and you crossed these, you may get a good dose of hybrid vigor in the offspring.
Just some thoughts.

The 901 Hebb 02 has been throwing round orange ones.
I'll have 2nd generation selfed seed this year.
I'm also working on these crosses.
389 Wheeler 03 (995 Carter X 869.5 Calai)
and crossing it with 636 Dill 03 (940 Mombert 98 X 1016 Daletas)

Ron,
You're making some interesting crosses.
I must say that the pumpkin you grew last year(at the beginning of your diary) is one of the most beautiful giant pumpkins I've seen!

My 869.5 Calai is pollinated with 1225 Jutras and vise versa. They should make nice shape and color.

A Dill 12 gave me a nice ORANGE "P" in 03. This year with my last Dill 12 seed all of the fruit is GREEN.

Will the Dill l2 seed from the Greenie give more greenie's or go back to orange?

Are you into politics? Is the "yes" for more green or orange?

845 Bobier '00 X 1140 Stelts '00.
the cross of my 728.5 Gerry.
i'd like to call it solely my own
fab-u cross of a lifetime, like the 935 X 865
"killer cross", but if my OWN attempts
at re-creating it don't work out, well.....
look at the 735 Drake on the AGGC. you will then know why.
if anyone DOES do this cross next season, i'd like to hear about it, 100% controlled crosses are a must.
'till then, lol...eg
