We all know one of the growers favorite things to do in the fall.....trade seeds. I wanted to get a list of the mother plants of some really big pumpkins, say 800 plus. If you have one of these monsters please tell us what the mother plant is, just to help out "future heavy hitters".

Thanks,
Jake Byrd

A proven seed myth with exception of 845.
weather conditions, flower choice and soil are bigger factors.

jeez sometimes men bicker more than woman. if you guys had any brains you would both realize that jake's looking for a list of MOMS of 800+ fruit. he already knows to look for what seed grew a big pumpkin, not the seeds from the pumpkin itself.

jake - mat's right in saying that weather and soil have a huge part in how big your pumpkin gets. a lot of seeds that have grown big ones are because lots of heavy hitters grew it because the cross looked good. i'm not saying that genetics have no role in things, because they most certainly do. but oftentimes seeds become popular because they have been grown by lots of people, increasing the number of big ones (you never hear about all the 100 pounders that the same seed grew)
ok i'll shutup now before i talk myself into a dead end.

you go Brigitte...:) I mean look at the lowly 451 Engel planted and grown by only one person, a 1st year grower at that.... Big, Heavy, and Orange...Go for the unproven and the underdogs.....

There is only (1), repeat (ONE), pumpkin, "ever", that has produced heavy OTC weights from *every* child, and *every* grandchild, that has come from it's seed...with a minimum 6 progeny to it's credit.
Anything less than 6 progeny is not a true indication of consistency in my opinion.

Southern,

I was actually poking fun at some extremely poor grammar, one whom makes statements like: "60 pecent all seed from any great parent go small." I may be wrong, but it seems that all this person can do is quote records from the Guiness books(and usually with errors). Has this person ever grown anything noteable, or do they just act the "authority?" I guess what I'm really trying to say is, this site is all about growers helping growers. False or untrue advise from someone whom hasn't experienced the subject personally may lead a newbie down the wrong path. With the exception of the above, I usually don't post advice that I'm not confident about, too many others do. Lately I have seen some advise from people who don't seem to know what they're talking about. Then again, I may be totally wrong. That's all.

yeah, vineman, i got a 950.4, that's 950.4, unless you meant Rose 960, lol, that is doing quite well, i pollinated it on the July 1st and it got pretty big pretty quickly.
it is right now a little over 400 pounds, but it has a lot of growth left in it and i'd be happy to just break my PB
of 728.5. thing is, with the 845 Bobier '00, i have noticed that the fruit doesn't seem to put on all of its weigh until the last couple of weeks, for ME anyweigh, so i am hoping the 950.4 has the same tendency, being an 845 selfed.
to all:
i STRONGLY suggest that if you have a 950.4, plant it next season! after all, it DID grow a 1032 Perez in Spain! eric
