Ok This year My biggest Pumpkin was an 25.5 #.. OK laugh all you want I had issues YES!!, Anyhow that 25.5 lber was grown from an 1178 L Wentzell X Self, Plant itself Grew awsome all year but little to NO fruit finally got a fruit set late in Aug then 3 weeks later the plant was DEAD.

anyhow I pulled all the seeds ( 182 seeds in total)
ONLY 96 were GOOD. I planted a few in a pot they all sprouted and after 2 weeks I pulled 2 seedlings and left one that was growing the best. The soil is from the garden
and he plant itself it now approx a month old with an 6" main vine which has formed a FLAT vine !! not happy but not sure if this is because of the seed itself not being majour enough or because its being grown indoors.

if its JUST the seed I probably wont grow it in 2005

whats the chances that all or most of the seeds from tis fruit will grow a flat vined fruit ? or does it just depend

thanks

Dave

Feed them to the gerbils and ask Lisa for a new seed....too many things going against that seed to risk a year on it....G

You feed a lot the the gerbils Glenn, they must be putting on some weight. As best I can figure, not all will be flat vine, but you will have some proportion of flat vine progeny, maybe 6-50% at worst. There may be some good genes in your 25.5 seed, but there are also many other great seeds out there that don't have known risk factors associated with the seed. You could have some genes in there that are female-infertile, and just continue having problems setting fruit. That is a bigger problem than flat-vine showing up as it could be more difficult to remedie than corecting a flat vine.
If the original 1178 plant had been a flat vine, then you would probably be in much worse case scenario.

A couple of Questions for you to ask yourself -

Is it really important to you to plant your own seed?
Are you willing to chance your entire season on this choice?

There are many associated risks to planting an unprooven seed (Nic's reply above) -especially your own from the first year.

From my perspective -there are too many good seeds out there to take a chance. My advice: Ask Lisa & Roger for some out of their '04 efforts.

Dave, my 1178 didnt flat vine this year but my 900 wentzell did, Im thinking that the 1178 mother is the 900 if Im not mistaken(correct me if im wrong, or tell me if im right). I lost my 1178 because i threw 4 big hand fulls of 0-0-60 onit. I was bummed out, Hell i didnt know any better, but i must say that the 1178 was a really nice growing plant, put ya gotta be carefull with the vines they snapped rather easy when u hook your four wheeler up to it with a loging chain.
