I grew the 838 in 2003. The plant double vined on me, but corrected itself around 6 feet. The plant was way behind the others because of that. The plant itself was beautiful, big leaves with very bright yellow vines. I grew two fruit on the plant. They did not grow very fast however. 318 est (838 bobier x 714 bobier) and 268 est (838 bobier x 846 calai). Even tho the 838 did not do much for me, the 268 seed produced a 700+ lb fruit and the 318 looks promising as well, according to test field observations. Both fruits male pollinators threw 750+ lb fruit.
I would suggest trying the 714 bobier over the 838. I have seen that one do better. Its the same cross.
