I have these seeds, and was wondering if anyone knows of any pumpkins grown from these, and if so how big were they, what did they look like, etc?

Here is a pic of a fruit grown from a 654. Was grown in CA where it is a fairly hot climate. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/displayphoto.asp?pid=1942&gid=-22156
It is known to throw a heavy to chart, wheel shaped, very orange pumpkin.

Thanks Thomas, that's a nice picture! Have you heard of other wheel fruits from it?

I grew the 940 Mombert 2000 this year and it was typical of that seed...tall, almost perfectly round, and mojo color. The 654 was open pollinated and Bob grew a 723 Bobier and 801.5 Stelts that year, so you should expect to get some variation in shape and color. You never know what's in the genetics when they're open pollinated.
The 659 was crossed with another color seed , 723 Bhaskaran, which has great color genetics in it's background, *should* be a great color producing cross. However, the 723 shape is more low and long so who knows what the shape variations will be.
Your best bet is to get the seed that grew both, 940 Mombert 2000, and your odds of getting tall, round, bright are very, very good. I selfed mine, so you're more than welcome to several Doug if I haven't already sent you some. I'll make sure I do if I still have your bubble, lemme know.

I got to see the 659 in person at the Elk Grove weigh-off in 03. It was AMAZING. Almost a perfect sphere, brilliant orange, smooth skin with no canteloping... simply perfect. I fell in love with it.

I grew the 659 this year, and was very dissappointed by a gopher... it attacked the vine about 2 feet out about less than 10 days after I polinated the first female. Bob Troy gave me all kinds of advice on gopher erradication after that. :) The fruit was growing perfectly spherical (unilke all the others in the patch), and the plant was up to that point the most vigorous, heat tolerant plant out of the 7 I was growing. In temps over 100 with around 15% humidity, very little wilting could be seen. It impressed me enough to ask Bob for more. I am planting 5 of them in 2005 in an effort to start my own line breeding program, looking for heat tolerance, color, and shape.

What is the cross of the 659?

Thanks everyone.
Kyle,
I did request your selfed 940 Mombert 00 seed a while back. You should have my bubble pack, unless you sent it back recently. Thanks Kyle. I'm really glad you selfed it.

Kyle,
I'll finally get your seeds in the mail tomorrow.

The 723 Bhaskaran is 400 Reynolds X 850 Wallace.
Does anyone here know the parents of these two?
I saw pictures of the pumpkins grown off these seeds(Bhaskaran's 2001 pumpkins). They both produced dark orange pumpkins. The 400 Reynolds produced the 723 Bhaskaran, which was a very reddish pumpkin.
I would guess the 659 Troy would produce great colored pumpkins, but shape would be the question mark, as Kyle stated.
I emailed Bob Troy, to see if he knew of any offspring from the 659 Troy. I'll relate it here, if I hear anything from him.

Bob Troy emailed me back.
He heard of one pumpkin grown from his 659 Troy 03 that was around 500 lbs. with very nice color and shape.
He got 2 pumpkins this year from the same seed(grown in a satellite patch, with little care). They both were around 400 lbs. One had a very nice color and shape, while the other one had some green in it.
I'm thinking of trying a plant from this seed next year. Time will tell. It might be nice to cross it into Kyle Little's 940 Mombert 00 X self(of this year).
