has anyone grown 2 seeds from the same pumpkin and and selfed one plant and sibbed the other plant and then crossed them both the following year?
would it be better to self both and cross both selfed the following year?
or cross one sib with the other sib?
take the 1446 for example with seed 1446(1) and 1446(2)
a) [1446(1) x 1446(1)] X [1446(2) x 1446(1)]= 1446(1121) b) [1446(1) x 1446(1)] X [1446(2) x 1446(2)]= 1446(1122) c) [1446(1) x 1446(2)] X [1446(2) x 1446(1)]= 1446(1221)
this same example could be expanded to 4 seeds from the same pumpkin to make it more complex, but for now let me know what you think about the self/sib possibilities for 2 seeds from the same pumpkin.
choose a) b) or c) and please explain your logic or instincts.
thanks jeff

d)112212.(two on one plant) Because you won't know which was the best cross possible until October.
Just my thoughts

O.K. I will have to use more than my usual one sentance. If you grow two seeds from one plant and one is better than the other you only want the genetics from the good one.If you selfed the bad one and sibbed the good one there is nowhere to go.

Do a search here on Bp.com for hybred vigor and line breeding. You should be able to answer your questions.

1, 2, 4, 6,...this shouldn't be too difficult for your brain Tom, isn't that how Hoosiers count to ten? LOL

My 2 cents would start with the question: What are you trying to accomplish? I might suggest that a desired goal be established before a game plan put into force. Homozygosity? Keep selfing Line- Breeding? Sib then self then self A little over simplified...but you get the idea. BF

thanx all, i just was trying to figure out how much inbreeding you can get away with before it is detrimental to the strain. no sense growing yellowhammmers, so to speak. shazzy
