hey you

Greencastle, PA

What's the background of the 1107.5? I like the 1156 and will be using it for a couple crosses next year as well.

Alex,
It's a crap-shoot on any cross. What may look great on paper can flop, and what looks confused and muddled, can do quite well.
The 732.4 is all 935 Lloyd and 865 Mettler genetics so while not "pure", it's fairly specific in it's lineage background....which *may* do well in crossing with a seed like the 1156, which has none of those genetics in it's background. An alternative may be a seed with more isolated and purer 935 Lloyd genetics, such as the 703 Smith you seek? (Just a thought to stimulate the thinking processes...)
Check out the articles in the "How To" section of this website on Joe Ailt's Hybrid Vigor articles. These may give you some insight towards making crosses such as you have proposed.

Kyle,
You are right about the crap shoot thing but any cross
between two good seeds does at least have a 25% chance of imparting the one characteristic of each pumpkin into the seeds of the offspring. It's great that we are so many growers and that at least some of these ON Paper good crosses can sometimes be tried.
I think a lot of experienced growers should try new crosses and they do every year but when a first time grower tries something I think they should try a proven seed...and I'm not
referring to AJG or anyone specific at all.
Best regards and I just wanted to put in my two cents since it's snow here and I'm bored.
