Would be interested to know what the common thinking is on seed potential for seeds that were grown from proven seeds. For example, the 473 Sandvik 04 was an 842 Eaton X 845 Bobier cross (same as the 230 Jepsen from Tremor). Assuming that the seed took genetic material from both parents, wouldn't the 473 or the 230 have the same genetic potential as either of the parents (in theory)? I keep getting tempted by auctions, but why bother when you have seeds like this?

It didn't matter in the 21 Beachy. The genetic potential is present regardless the parents weight. What isn't there is a parent that proved itself by growing a 1000 lb fruit which gives us a better feling. Of course a 1000 lb parent can still produce poor progeny.

For the record, the 845 Bobier plant that was used in the 230 & 281 produced the 690 Garrell '03 EST (and others)last year. The clone was kept over winter & grown again in 2004. So that plant did have weight potential.

Its a crap shoot how the genetics tumbled together, I have seen a lot of hot looking crosses from some of the worlds best genetics not produce anything like their parents. The nice thing about proven seeds is the odds of it producing like the "big One" are much higher although still not gaurenteed.

The common thinking is the smaller fruit sucks. The reality is if theres a known reason why it was smaller and that reason isn't related to genetics then why not grow it...it should be as unknown and possibly as good (or gooderer) than the bigger.....
