The 14" green plstic pan half way down this page served us well last year.

Last summer we vacationed at Mooselook Lake in Maine. Driving around we found a state park with a stream where panning was encouraged. Across the road was a prospecting/gift store/deli. The old woman at the deli counter took a few minutes to teach my son how to pan & sold us a pan for $5 & a special water-trowel for $10.

My wife & son spent about an hour panning in the cold mountain stream. They found several tiny flecks that were heavy enough to convince the stores proprietor of their jubilant success. Not a commercial success, but we had fun & learned a bunch.

This pan, a plastic pipet, a tiny glass jar & the water-trowel should provide a decent start.
