My grandpa always puts egg shells in his garden every year and only uses other organic addmendments and has great success. Hes 86 and actually wants to grow a giant pumpkin next year. What benefit does this have and should you boil the shells before crushing them and mixing in soil. Im sorry I know this has probally been asked before but any replys would be appreciated.

Egg Shells are a great ammendment to the compost pile or garden, their free, good source of calcium, slow release, organic, and after the sun hits them for a while... they crush into powder....My Nana did the same. No need to wash em off, I toss em out with the coffee and the filter in the morning......Your GrandPa is going to do great his first year growing....Grow'em BIG.

Cool Wiz I always wondered what the little white things he was putting in his garden every year. Im stoked about him wanting to grow a big one. At 86 years young he needs something to keep him busy. I went To a biscuit house this morning and asked if they would savc all their coffe grinds and eggs for me each day and Ill pick them up every evening and they looked at me strange but their more then happy to do it. Thanks as always for the reply Its appreciated.

Jason, just like with collecting coffee grounds from local coffee shops, I went to a bread manufacturing plant and asked them to save me egg shells for use in my garden. I was actually kind of embarrassed cause after the first day, they had 2 huge garbage bags for me....then told me that they used several thousand eggs per day.
I only needed them to save for me for about a week and I had all the egg shells that I could handle. Has been a couple of years now and when I do my spring tilling, I still see the odd little piece of shell so they are still breaking down and being usefull now.

What a good idea for collecting egg shells!
I hear you on the coffee. I think my local starbucks probably produces more than 100 pounds a day of coffee grounds.
