Ok, I am creating a site which will essentially provide what aggc is to pumpkins, for soil. The first version will be a beta and all comments will welcomed regarding what I should add/remove to make the site complete. I am no soil expert, but I hope this will make the soil game go easier for some.

Essentially, growers will be able to add results of soil tests, as well as ammendments made. This will allow users to see what a particular result contained, what ammendments were made, and what the next results showed, etc. I will eventually put some graphing stuff in so that a user will be able to track (graphically) the trends of their soil.

I am creating the database schema now. For now I have the following things to track for a sample.

    id

    sample_date

    lab
    soil_type

    soil_ph
    buffer_ph

    organic_matter

    est_nitrogen_release
    nitrate

    phosphrous_olsen
    phosphrous_double_acid

    phosphrous_weak_bray
    phosphrous_strong_bray
    phosphrous_bicarb

    potassium (k2o)

    magnesium

    calcium

    sodium

    cec (meq/100gm)

    sulfur

    iron

    manganese

    zinc

    copper

    boron

    aluminum

    base_sat_k

    base_sat_mg

    base_sat_na

    base_sat_h

Comments? Is this a valuable tool people will use?

Anyhow, my question is, should I include all 5 P test types...and are all of these distinct types, or do I have the same test under diff names?

Thanks

I dont know why some spaces showed up in there. Disregard some of the "groupings" as they are not intended to mean anything.

No problem. I am just banking on other people who know more than me to assist the selection of what I track...Tremor, Russ, etc.

Jordan, you might want to contact Andy Wolf and have him send you his soil test file in .xls format. He has collected a lot of data over the years and even did a presentation at the convention a couple of years ago.

The file is very comprehensive and includes soil sample tests results from a host of heavy hitters which includes some of the fruit they grew from the tested plots. I believe most of the results were inconclusive but Andy may be able to help you.

Jordan Rivington (JRO)

I will contact him. My goal is to provide a place where everyone can enter their sample results each time they have some. In addition, each amendment they put into the soil can be added/viewed, and each following analysis will also be available.

This should help pinpoint what it takes to make sample x look like y. Also, hopefully I will be able to incorporate some graphical libraries to show the nutrient trends of a particular patch.

For example here is the fall sample, here is what I added, here is my spring sample. Another grower can come in and say here is what my sample looks like, I see that grower z had a similar one, he added this and got this, I suppose I should add this. I plan to add some more complex functions, but will not elaborate until they are mostly working. This is my winter project.

This sounds like a great idea Jordan. I believe if you also contact Phil Hunt and Marc Levi (crammed)we may be able to get something like this up and running on the GVGO web site for all to see.

So Phil and Crammed run the IT aspect of GVGO?

Sorry Scottie. Check now.

Well, the only issue is that it is being designed and implemented using Java Servlets and JSP, so the GVGO site would have to support it. Not sure which DB they use in the backend.

Perhaps it will have to be a link to my web server. If it gets popular enough, I will transfer it to a commercially hosted box if necessary.

Tremor

Ctpumpkin@optonline.net

Andy & I discussed this a few years ago. There are too many variables to insure consistent results.

Growers who don't take a proper sample.
Labs that use the same test protocol reporting different results.
Different organic amendments in various regions.
One grower amending with MOP, another with Greensand, kelp or SOP.
Some folks feed plants, others expect to feed the soil.
One tills in before the snow, another waits for spring.
Two identical reports from the same county run by the same lab on the same day & the seeds of the same fruit differ by hundreds of pounds?

If we got a few soil folks working on it the next thing we know we have 6 new soil tests in our inbox every day all submitted in a different report format from a different lab using different extraction methods. Two hours later we make recommendations & discover that one person went to the ag-coop, another is at the hardware store & another in in Home Depot all buying something different but with the same expectation. Then they all forget to buy a digital scale & start slinging coffee cans around.

When all is said & done, the best bet for the non-professional is to work with a local growers club &/or lab that knows the native soil types & has been operating with them for many years.

Jordan, You are way over my head with the Java Jargon.

I beleive as Steve states there are some problems as he has described above.

Still the web site idea is valid and can be used for things such as Phos levels to compare serviablity of mycoyrhisia fungi. OM levels, CEC, pH and maybe even ratios too. These are valuable and good data points to start with.

Use the Kiss method and access only a few points and leave the others open for interpretation.

Tremor, these are all good points. I have considered several of these, and think I have some solutions. Still in this case, I think the only way I am going to learn that is that hard way. I have some good ideas, and though they will require more work on my part, I still think I will give it a go.

Jordan, I'm not really a programmer or database guy. So, I'm happy to help. But, I may only be able to do so when it comes to the aesthetics of the UI. Java's out of my league.

I can tell you that the databases on the GVGO site are MySQL. We can have a total of six and we're only using two right now. Those two are used for the message board and for the photo gallery. The databases are managed by the two pre-programmed PHP modules. So, I don't actually administer the database directly. I do it through the forum and gallery interfaces.

I am working on converting the current design from static HTML to use PHP includes. So, maybe the Java servlet could fit into the site that way. I'm pretty sure that the server would support it.

I may be wrong about .JSP support:

http://www.hmhelpdesk.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=78

"JSP support is not available on shared hosting accounts, due to stability and resource issues generated by having that support active. Dedicated server clients can set up JSP support on their servers if they wish with the caveat that we cannot guarantee any performance-related metrics with such support in place."

Andy Wolf has been collecting data for years regarding soil analysis results. He was kind enough to provide me with this information.

For now I will be giving access to the site based on who has contributed in the past. I have a list (to follow) of contributors.

1. Can these contributors please contact me via email (jordan.rivington@gmail.com) so I can setup an account for them.

2. If anyone else thinks that the results of the some of these growers are worth looking at (which they are), email me any results you have. Please include how many patches you have and which soil results came from which patch. I need this to track which amendments went into which patch for tracking.

I will likely have the first phase done soon. It will allow me to put new samples in, let you as a grower view results by grower (as long as you contributed).

Once I get the different patches sorted out for past samples, any new amendments can be associated with a patch, to allow a before and after view of a patch sample.

Thanks again....oh yeah, the names....

Put the lab in to the db and we can cross-compare lab to lab or, stay in the same lab. sounds like you've got the technology background to do this. I do the same stuff for a living. Jordan Rivington (JRO)

For everyone else, I will put all data in as anonymous until I am contacted from the grower. I will contact some myself, but there are lots of people. Perhaps I should have emailed people in private.

The only thing is, that to make it worthwhile, the data must continue to come in and be current. Andy suggested that access only be given if new samples are contributed, and I agree. That means we need logins/passwords. If you don't contact me, I can't create an account for you.

11/18/2007 11:29:32 AM

Jordan Rivington (JRO)

Windsor, Ontario, Canada

Absolutely right. I should have emailed privately.

I did ask if they wanted their contact information private/public. I do agree however. It was a bad idea on my part. It really didn't even cross my mind because everyone always says the best part of the AG community is the sharing of knowledge. I was just pumped to be able to create a site for everyone like this. It seems to be one thing that many people always ask about. AGGC has all the info about heavy hitters and crosses and such.

Again, I do apologize. I don't have a problem admitting I was wrong. Everyone here will be anonymous be default. If you still want your data gone, email me jordan.rivington@gmail.com.

However, I do agree with Andy, that to see info, you have to contribute. I don't believe in anonymous accounts...might as well just give everyone access. I am not charging anything for this, and am spending lots of time, so the contribution rule still applies.

I don't think heavy hitters need this, its the new growers.

Once again, my bad. Don't let my mistake ruin it for the other growers which could benefit from this site.

11/18/2007 11:50:25 AM

Jordan Rivington (JRO)

Windsor, Ontario, Canada

I have changed the design of the user info:

email - only used as a key to identity you uniquely. can be public, but by default its NOT

nickname - public (you chose it)
fname - private
lname - private
password - private

That should be better.

11/18/2007 12:05:31 PM

UnkaDan

New growers need to learn "thier" soil and what it needs, there are no magic formulas for soil that growsum big,,,too many factors come into play.

Weather, experience, work ethic to name a few. Take the time to read Andy's files and you will quickly find out there is no real cross reference that exists between that data and what isn't already being discussed on these boards or well documented doing google or site searchs here.

Now if a database contained things like soil tests, weather data (including soil temps, rain amounts and when, average daytime temps, amount of full sun, etc), and perhaps number of years growing,,,see where this leads?

A daunting task for sure,,,,

good luck if you attempt the site,, personally I think your time could be better spent elsewhere

Just my 2 cents,,

hey jordan if i send in a soil sampel test will i get to be part of the site

Of course. KathyT sent me 5 samples 30 minutes ago and I have already created an account for her. At this stage of development you can only retrieve samples...no advanced searches yet, but they will come.

Send me a desired password, but please DO NOT send me a password you use for anything else...I work in computer security and want to ensure your private information on other sites (banking, etc) is protected.

When you send the samples, if you can include the info above...minimally many patches, a name for each patch, which sample came from which patch. This will allow you to send more samples from same patches in spring and see what the differences in each patch are.

As a plus, if you can, tell me what you added to each patch. That will make it so you can see what made your patch go from a to b.

Later this will allow someone to say, if I add 500lbs of manure to my patch, and I have P level of x, what will my P level look like 6 months later.

Tom, there is no personal information made public and none needs to be sent except for your gosh darned soil test result!!!! Besides Jordan has already asked if you want the email made public. it isnt necessary? My point is anyone and everyone will be able to access any personal data that is submitted just by submitting soil test results, so when you folks are asking for everything short of a blood type, IT IS A BAD IDEA FOR ANYONE TO GIVE OUT THIS MUCH PERSONAL INFO, are you so naive that you cannot see that? My lord, I didnt mean to get so "gosh darned" intense....lol...I gave this data to someone I have known for a few years and trust, I have no idea who this person is.

First, lay off Kahuna. I dont remember anyone addressing you specifically either, other than your name being in the list....and so is his.

1. Tom your email is on this site...everyone already knows it. I took the liberty to use your email (which gives away your first and last name) in the white pages and found your full address. I wont bother posting on this site, but I can email you if you dont believe me.

2. I already said you don't have to give me anything before you posted.

3. It doesn't matter how long I have been studying soil. This is a website to hold info and allow users to retrieve what they want. I have been working JSP/MySQL for 10+ years, so I am qualified to do this. I could make a site to hold any information if I was told what to keep. Hence asking everyone what I should keep...above and beyond the obvious information contained in EVERY soil sample.

4. As for protecting everyone elses data, it is all stored on a brandnew Sun Microsystems Sunfire server with hardware encryption on the disk. The entry point into my network is protected not only with a full firewall, but also an intrusion detection system. The security of my network meets government standards. If you want to protect your email and address, you should try to bring down the internet...cause thats the only way.

I dont even need to display your name if you want. I have a nickname spot. I just wanted to keep track of who it came from, so if someone was a repeat data contributor, I could associate the new data with the old. Thats all.

The GPS coords, were just because its kinda cool. I have a similar site for tracking all the musky and steelhead I catch and I have gps coords for all that too, again, I suppose its force of habit.

There is nothing wrong with looking out for fellow growers, it should be applauded. I am trying to get the new growers information that will help them get rid of the learning curve.

I fully understand if you still dont want your soil sample data, but will be happy to share it with others (under only Bohica) if you dont mind.

Thats a long way away pap. Shoot me an email, I'm sure there is an account for the godfather whether his data is in the site or not.

Jordan,

You can use my data.

If it were up to me, I'd make the site accessible to all. That's the best way to ensure that the site will hit critical mass, and be successful. Good luck with it.

Ok, great. Much appreciated. I will email you with further details.

It is open to all who send data. I think that is reasonable. Everyone loves free. After all, everyone has gotten a soil test, and if not, this site wont help you.

Jordan:

And, now back to something not related to security. Would you consider including the following information in the web site?

base saturations: ppm or lb/acre

A master table for the 'lab'. Lab info that may be easy to obtain: name, address, phone, e-mail. This would assist for reference and contacting the lab. Tables would be a great solution but, I realize how much work is involved.

Additional patch info...
a. tilling method: (till, no-till, other tilling method)
b. cover-crop name:

Tilling: tilling impacts the fertility of the patch. IMHO, tilling method, while not a soil test attribute, fills in the scenario of soil fertility. Would like to see a drop down list selecting the method.

Cover-crop: impacts the fertility of the patch. Yes/No checkbox would be ok or a drop-down with crop name for full benefit.

Good stuff. I will add fields for tilling method. I think the cover crop would be considered an ammendment...which there will be a separate table for.

Both will be drop downs.

At this stage, I am entering all data, since I dont have all server side validations in place yet. Once they are done, I will likely allow people to add their own data. Would be much easier on me.

I can add a table for labs too. That being said, anyone participating, please lookup the address, etc, for your lab and send to me.

Thanks for the input.

Soil type is important. There is no question. I have a spot for it in the DB, but no one has given me their soil type.

If you know it, please send it too.

Perhaps I spoke the wrong way....when I said lay off kahuna, I didnt mean, Russ lay off me, I meant, dont get pissed or yell at Russ.

Russ is a good friend, and was talking to him on the phone last night...I assume he took it the way I meant it because he answered the phone...lol.

Jordon, I think your site is going to work out very well, once everyone starts entering there data its gonna be nice to compare soil samples with other growers, I also think its going to be a nice site to learn how other growers tweak there soil to get it balanced.
