I don't know the first thing about alfalfa. I have one patch with high % OM, @ 20%. I was planning on tilling in some Calcium Nitrate this week to boost nitrogen levels and add Ca at the same time. Would I be better off adding alfalfa and Gypsum. An explanation of how alfalfa ultimately provides nitrogen would be helpful as well. Thanks.

Andy, directly from the bag that I have it reads;

Primarily a plant source of nitrogen, (5-1-2) Alfalfa Pellets also contains trace minerals and triacontanol, a plant growth promoter. Broadcast 25-50 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. before planting, or apply as a side dressing later in the season for plants requiring additional nitrogen.

I'd use all three. The amount of calcium nitrate you put on shouldn't be enough to give you much of a Ca boost.
