Trying to be forward thinking and wondering when is a good time to pull soil samples so I can begin working on my soil for next year. Should I wait until the pumpkins are done growig, till the plant dies? Or could I sample now so I could receive results faster and then again in the Fall once I get started?

I would wait so I could sample from the area the plants are growing in if you are going to grow in the same place. Only half way through the season right now so you cannot be sure what the plant is going to deplete in the last couple of months of growing.

Cool soil tends to yield the more consistant results but I'll sample soil any time if the need arises. Waiting till October can cause you to miss the ideal amendment period.

Seed guy the big shots two or more tests per year one about now and one at the end of the year and maybe one just before the beginning of the year. You are in sunny California so you need not worry about waiting until October to do your test, your soil will have plenty of time to process any amendments you do in October.
