If you were going to take a year off to just get a new patch ready for 2010, how would you go about it?

First and foremost, soil test, from a reputable lab...you won't know where you're headed...till you know where you are. Then post here, and lots a really smart folks will certainly help ya!!! Peace, Wayne

I would definetly consider doing a cover crop with a couple of different varieties of plants that would do well in both summer and winter.

I'm not a complete novice. I'm just giving up on my present patch due to disease problems, and moving to a new location. I just wanted to get a number of ideas from people on how they get a patch ready from scratch (i.e. applications of leaves, manure, compost, variety of cover crops, etc.).
