Is there a % of salt in kelp meal? the reason i ask is i can get ground kelp from my local feed mill, but has 5% or less in 50 lbs. is this to much salt ? or is this normal for kelp ? thanks Bill

i wouldent overdo it bill, 5% is 2.5 lbs salt per bag. There must be stuff with a lower content.

I plan on using sea-90 next year, it is sea water. It has minerals & trace elements. I think to much is not good for the pumpkin plant.

thanks all, I was afraid that was to much salt, but i cannot find the salt content in the kelp from pumpkin related sources , like neptunes , ohio earth, etc.. just so conveniant and less expensive to use local source. thanks again, Bill

Bill you always bring up good topics... You are correct to be suspicious if the NaCl % is missing from the analysis. I'm finding many are like your finding. Maybe Mr Lembke can set us straight.

To continue with this thread if an application of excessive salt content was applied wouldn't an application of gypsum grab some of this salt and leach it out of the soil over the winter. I realize many only apply gypsum in spring because it leaches out quickly but if applied in fall wouldn't it also grab some of the salt and drag it out?

Applied in the fall it'll leach out over the winter in most situations. Like Chuck said, gypsum helps too.
