Did you do a soil test? Do you know how much you need to apply? I applied my granulated ferts in the fall and will retest the soil in the spring before planting....if i need to increase the numbers i will add some more and till it in before I plant...

Never... Add carbon based ferts not salt.

All heavy hitters will tell you you need a soil test performed...and yes people who grow large pumpkins do use granular ferts...

Only add garnular materials if you know exactly how much you need!
Phosphate and Potassium materials and lime can be added in the fall or spring. Nitrogen and sulfur materials should be added in the spring only.
There are nothing wrong with granular fertilizers. The plants really don't know the differance between an organic p205 source and a manufactured one. However, salt levels can be a concern with some materials. The key is caluclating exactly what you want to add. Most competitive patches have their levels to the point that no additional granular materals are necessary. This is why the HH's don't use much granualar...because they don't need it.
