Hello,

I received my soil test back and it is showing my manganese level really low at 1ppm. I have seen quite a few soil tests reports here on bp and have not seen a Manganese level this low.

What is optimum Manganese level for growing AG's?

Is there fast acting supplement I can add to bring my Mn levels up?

Other micro nutrients levels:
Results in PPM:
zinc:6
Iron:38
Copper:1.4
Boron:0.5
Sulfur:129

I plan on putting down about 50 lbs of kelp on 1800sqft
and about 80 lbs of Alfalfa pellets. I also plan on using a foliar of seaweed on a weekly basis.

I know the amendments listed above have a wide range of Micro-nutrients and manganese is one of them, could this be enough manganese to supplement the deficiency in my soil.

Thanks a lot for your Help!

Erik

Mn in soil (3-20 ppm), Mn in plant tissue (20-200 ppm). I know there was a presentation on nutrient levels at Niagra this year, perhaps someone who was there will chime in if those ranges have been modified at all. With what you plan to add, I would think you'll be in good shape.

Agro-K makes a few foilar products that contain Mn (multi purpose micronutrients or 5-10-5 w/ micronutrients are a few of them). You might want to check with Craig to see if he has any left.

Get some Manganese sulphate and add a little to your water as you apply it and add a little to your foliar mixes.

There is a granular manganese sulfate (27%-32%), you should be able to get from a farm supply that blends bulk fertilizer. It comes in 50 lb bags and should cost you around $20 a bag or less. The below article is talking about application rates around 25 lbs per acre, which works out to about .6 lb per 1000 ft2, so you don't need very much.

There are some very good foliar manganese products. I use a product called SuperMan and apply it twice, about two weeks apart starting around mid July. (our tissue tests usually show manganese deficiency. I apply the produst as a 3% solution.

I'd bet you have a soil pH > 7. Fixing that pH problem would be the first order of business, but/and a little Mn Sulfate (NOT Epsom Salt = Mg Sulfate) banded or foliar spray should help.

Here's a link with some info on Mn:

christules...correct me if I'm wrong but epsom salts supplies magnesium and not manganese as this post is asking.

Thanks a lot for all of the Help!!

Bathabitat: My PH is on the low end at 6.2 from what I read more manganese is typically available when you have a ph in the low 6's and as your ph rises up towards 7 less manganese is available.

I have added lime to bring my ph up.

I have been looking around locally and this manganese sulfate is not anywhere to be found, since I only need a little bit of it I will prob pic it up online unless anybody knows where to get some in western, pa or eastern to central ohio?

Thanks again.
