hello all we just got pounded with a massive wind storm and after driving by the beach i noticed thousands of lbs of kelp was washed up LIGHT BULB,,,, i started collecting it for the garden because next year money might be a little tight,,, the more organics i can find the better,, how would you guys break down fresh kelp? i mean what would you do if you was in the possession of endless amounts of the stuff

i usually give my kids a quarter to fill bags up when we go to the beach, i put the kelp up on screens and wash out the salt then let it dry, i crush it up when dry with a 2x4.

thats find seems like it would work but i got a ton or more of the stuff,, i wonder does it have to be crushed u would think it would break down better left wet ,,, and after winter wouldnt all the salt have been washed out?

layer of seaweed and lime,cover with fresh horse manure and lime,layer of seaweed and lime,more horse manure and lime,more seaweed and lime,more horse manure and lime until the pile is about 6ft high.You will be surprised how fast this will compost!By the way..if you are looking for night crawlers for ice fishing throughout the winter months,believe me there will be no shortage under the pile:)

don't forget to saturate the layers with molassis! also you can place a light layer over the entire patch for winter and till it in come spring.It will be as dry as corn flakes and break down very easily.Don't over do it as i felt i had better results in my patch with less seaweed.. not more.

Donkin I prepped my patch next year with wood compost, cow manure and the fresh NS seaweed. I put the fresh seaweed on top end of november, about 2 inches. If it not broken down by spring what can I do?
