According to my soil test my main need is Magnesium. I was thinking of using Epsom salts to bring it up. What are typical rates you guys use for 1000 square feet? What ppm do you like to see? Also, do you apply in fall or spring?

Thanks

What's your current rate in the soil? Did your soil test have a recommendation?

Epsom salt is 13% sulfur and 10% magnesium. If you know how many pounds of magnesium you need, apply 10 times that weight of Epsom salt. It is very soluble, so I apply it in the spring. I blend it very well with any copper or manganese sulfate or borax that I need, and kelp meal, and spread it with a fertilizer spreader before I till. I spread my potash and chicken litter compose separately just because that gets to be too much for the spreader to handle all at once.Sometimes it gets spread a few weeks before I till and let rain start to work it into the soil. Western Labs recommends 250+ ppm of magnesium. You also need to watch the ratios of magnesium with phosphorus, zinc, and copper.
