I received my soil sample and was wondering if anyone could give me some solid advice. AFTER I took the sample I added 21 yds of 5-6 year old manure, 220# of gypsum and about 60 bags of maple leaves. I tilled it all in and planted a cover crop of winter wheat. Here are the numbers from the sample.

Ph…………6.9
OM……….14%
P…………..283 ppm
K…………..843 ppm
Mg…………424 ppm
Ca………….5181 ppm
Zn…………..8.4 ppm
Zn index…….49.2
Mn…………..5.4 ppm
Mn index…….12.9 ppm
Cu……………0.6 ppm
Fe…………….30.4 ppm
B……………...1.55 ppm
Cation ex……..33
Base Sat……..K-6.6, Mg-11, Ca-79, H-4
% CEC from OM…….98%

Any help would be appreciated…………Phil

Forgot to mention that my garden is 120 x 25 or about 3000 sq ft.

Phil,

I got the email. I think things look good. But with already higher than normal calcium, the newly added Gypsum might push the borderline Manganese (Mn not to be confused with Mg) down a bit.

I have noticed that a lot of thousand pounders come from soil that tests low in Mn. So perhaps we needn't be concerned.

Was it dairy Cow manure?

Phil, WOW! Looks really good. You have finely balanced soil. You should be tough to beat in Port Elgin next year. Where did you find the Gypsum?

Side note: Winter is here in Ontario as we had 4" of SNOW yesterday.

Copper, where do you get your gypsum? I can only find it in the 5 pound bags.
thanks,

Steve, the manure was from beef cattle. I'm worried about the high levels of P & K and was wondering if the cover crop of winter wheat will help to use some of it up? Do I need to add Mag. to the mix to bring it in line with the K & Ca? I do have some Mn here I can put in if I really need it. Wheat is up about 2" high now.
Russ, I found the gypsum at the Durham Farmer's Co-op in Orono ($7.99 for 20#). Phone # is 905-983-9134. We also had snow yesterday, but only about an inch. Glad I got my garden ready. Thanks guys, your the best.

If you mow off the cover crop & don't till it under you might crop off some of the P & K.

That is some super charged soil! You're numbers are really high but in balance, I think it looks pretty good! How much and what did you add before this to get those numbers? (last year?) I wouldn't have added anything this fall.

Last season I added 25 yds of 5-6 year old manure, 100-150 bags of maple leaves, 50# sulfur (to get the PH down), 200# calcium and some Kelp. This fall I added all this before I got my sample back. Up here in Canada you have to get your fall prep work done fast or it will be snowing before you know it. Next season I will take the sample on the first of Sept.
