First of all, nice to see another WV grower, I'm from north of Wheeling in Warwood, WV. You need to get your pH up near 2 points. Add 50# of lime per 1000 sq. ft. to get your pH up one point. In your case add 100#/1000 sq, ft. It will also bring up your Mg and Ca. Add some soft rock phosphate or bone meal to get your P higher as well. You want a 1:3:15 ratio of K:Mg:Ca. I would add about 5 yds. good compost/1000 sq. ft. also to balance the soil with organic matter or plant 20# winter rye per 1000 sq. ft. for improved organic matter. I'm assuming also that you have the typical clay-type WV soil. DOn

hmmm, looks like the first official West Virginia Giant Pumpkin Growers Association meeting...lol. Looks like you have the typical Wv low pH high Mg soil. Do not use Dolomitic lime! Just trust me on that! Use calcitic lime. Looks like the convoy to the weigh-off might be growing Don. Hey, by the way Don, do you have any relatives that work at the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville? I know a guy that works there with the same name as yours. Just wondering.

One other thing pumpkinpatchkid, stop using WVU for soil samples. I think we have discussed this via e-mail tho :)

I'm not a West Virginian, but with Magnesium levels like that, I'd wager Calcitic Limestone is probably available in your area. The Potash can also come up a bit.

I'd start with 150 lbs Calcitic Lime and 5 lbs of Sulfate of Potash per 1000 sq ft tilled.

Believe it or not Steve, calcitic lime is extremely difficult to find here! Everybody carries dolomite. The problem is, no one around here knows there is a difference between the two. I got dumb looks at every single place I went during my search, and the phrase, "I don't know what you mean." from every place I called (with the exception of the two Lesco stores I called). The one place I found it, didn't know it was any different from the other lime they carry. One was a pulverized dolomitic, the other is a pelletized calcitic. They didn't know there was a difference. Good luck finding Sulfate of Potash too. The closest I could get was Muriate of Potash, which I have asked about in another thread.
By the way, the supplier for calcitic lime I found is Split Rail Feeds in Steubenville, on 7th street (for you growers in my local area).

Thanks for the offer Keith, very generous indeed. Hopefully, I will have better luck come spring. Appearantly, most places around here stop carrying certain products once their spring/summer supply runs out. Maybe I'll make a side trip to Mill Creek next time I'm in Sistersville. My job sometimes takes me that way.

Wow, I just looked up Mill Creek. It won't be a Sistersville trip that brings me that way! I do some work at A. B. College in Philippi every now and then, that's a little closer to you than Sistersville. Occassionally, I have to overnight there. Next time I do, I'll look you up.
