Check this post out pumpkin or broke. http://bigpumpkins.com/MsgBoard/ViewThread.asp?b=22&p=187524 This meeting will be in Waynesville, NC. It is the most southern meeting I know of. There are not many growers in Ga. So several of the growers meet with the Nc, Tn, and Sc growers there last year. The Ga. growers I know of are me, Ray Upchurch- Carrollton, Bob Attaway- Flowery Branch, Ally Glover- Cairo, Mike Nepereny- Hall county I think, Jason D. North Ga. Charles Seabolt- Henry ct. I think, David Johnston- North Ga. I hope I didn't forget anyone. Take Care, Doug Adams Carrollton, Ga. John 3:16

I live in Augusta, GA and am very new to growing AG's. My family in PA grow them. Interested in finding others around to share some tactics. Good luck. My email is scott.rossman@us.army.mil

Howdy, Doug. Here's one more Georgia grower you can add to your list. I'm john hatcher from metro Atlanta. Splendid place to crack open some asphalt and drop a seed in the clay. :)
Anyway I've watched your diary and a couple of other Georgia growers for a while. Last year was my first growing AG; Bessie was 502 lb (EST). Maybe I'll be in your league one day. My pumpkin blog is jhatcher.blogspot.com.
My email is jhatcher@ciena.com if y'all ever get together closer than North Carolina.

I Live in Georgia and have been around for several years.
I have spent time and efforts to organize southern growers.
Whoever pumpkin or broke posts or Preachers and wife should at least be willing to identify him or her selves?
The group who really matters met last weeend in Wayesvile NC.
If this is a serious effort identify yourself.
Just my opinion:

Flowery Branch is on the Southeastern tip of Lake Lanier about 10 miles north of Buford and 15 miles south of Gainesville.
An odd fact, I live in zone 7 in Georgia, Glenn Andrews lives in zone 7 in Missapequa Long Island New York.
Glenn, glad to hear about your daughter. What do you mean yanbkee slams, where does your mother-in-law live?

Hi all you Ga growers, Hi "B", jhatcher, and Jason D, it is good to have yall. All areas of Ga. are hot for giant pumpkin growing. South ga. is even hotter. Starting early as possilbe may be good yall. I am going to start one early plant myself. If you want it for fall decorations you need to start later. I have planted as late as July 23rd. and got a 400 pounder. I didn't pick till the end of Oct. In my area If I want one for fall I think I need to plant about the first of June. It is just according to when you want them. Will be glad to help anyway I can. email me at onedude@bellsouth.net

"The group who really matters met last weekend in Wayesvile NC."
I wasn't quite sure what to think of that, Bob. I wouldn't think *any* growers in Georgia really mattered in the grand scheme of the sport?
I personally don't have the commitment to drive to NC for a meeting, but then again here I am reading the message board on a Saturday morning in the middle of March... stealing coffee grounds from work in early November... asking for tools to fight SVB's in my Christmas stocking...
I suppose I'm somewhere past obsessed, but haven't graduated into the "lunatic fringe" yet?
Speaking of UNC's basketball team, I stayed up until 1:15 AM watching GT and Wake play that 114-112 game Thursday night. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it.
Anyway it's good to hear there are more Ga growers than I realized. I'll like to try to keep up with your progress this season.

Out of respect for Doug Adams and the folks who are trying to organize I will not respond except to say you don't like my comment about Waynesville NC but you use the term "lunatic fringe".

What a bummer - when I finally post on BigPumpkins, the first thing I do is choose the wrong words and irritate folks. My apologies to Bob and anybody else who didn't care for my last post.
I'll shut up and go back to lurking. But Jonathon Taylor, if a Georgia organization comes to fruition, I'm interested:
john hatcher jhatcher@ciena.com (I live in berkeley lake, ga, which is basically duluth)
And thanks for your thoughts on planting dates Doug!

Hi Doug - thanks!
I think I may plant around May 1st now. I'm torn between going early to beat the heat and going late to hit Halloween. For any *real* grower that's a no-brainer, but I loved carving it for Halloween and have plans for sculpting it this year.
I'm growing a seed from Dave Bhaskaran, a great guy from Minnesota - you probably know the name. The 974.5 Bhaskaran had the 1420 LaRue as its mother, and good genes on the pollinator side too, so I think I'm making a step up this year. I'm pretty psyched about the seed. However, Lee (pumpkin or broke) has offered a Holland 1112. Think I should take him up on it?
I'll try to check in Thursday night 3/24 for any advice or other chat, and maybe I can help folks out with their vine borer problems - pain has been a good teacher to me in that area.
