Sound like yall need to ride to North Carolina and join us. Hell will just change the name to South Eastern Giant Pumpkin Growers. There are growers from a couple of state that are members. Yea, that has a ring to it....SEGPG

I have thought about this and thought about it. I think the guys in N.C. are doing a great job, I just belive there are state's surrounding us that are caught inbetween like me and you. To far South to go up North and to far East to go West. The SEGPG would be a win, win for everyone, what do you think Sambo..

There will be at least one giant pumpkin growr up in Bartow County. I've already begun the work of preparing the bed and adding amendments and humus to this GA Red Clay. One question, I have read that those in Ohio use 12 yards of manure in their bed preparation. What in this world do you do with 12 yards...especially if just growing one pumpkin. Too, If I go deeper than a foot I hit nothing but the hardest of hardpan and Stone Mountain. In fact, just doing so would create a swimming pool. I have a 4 ft by 4ft area prepped....not enough? I can't see how I to rip and till a huge area for all of the runners since this isn't in a farm field.

mensplace....
I'm not much of a pumpkin grower (my biggest is 134) but 4 by 4 isn't gonna be enough. Most pumpkins are supposed to set about 10 foot down the vine. As far as the rest of your questions, I can't give you good info cuz I have no real experience. Post in the new growers forum to get more attention. hope my little bit of info helps. best of luck!

Mensplace, well 4x4 would be a challange as some pumpkins probably get as big as your patch. I don't want to discourage you either, but you have to ask yourself if you are up for a challange! You really have to get creative with a small patch for sure! How about growing main vine in a circle along perimeter and a well placed pumpkin in the middle? Pumpkin would probable be better on outside though if you have room. That is only way I can see that it would be even remotely possible in that space. It will be work ... training ... trimming ... and don't count on a big one, but you *may* be able to grow one. Just to grow one in 4X4 is a big enough challange! Good luck!
